    Hi
I have ISO, I use Nero to burn stuff.
This ISO is for making a CD, if I try to burn it to DVD Nero spits it out and sez "NO NO!! Put in a CD dummy!"

Can I force Nero to burn it to a DVD, or is that impossible ??

I don't use Nero but I found this.

As plodr points out in her quote, the formats of CDs and DVDs is different. DVDs have smaller and deeper impressions burned to them because of the difference in capacity for the same size media. Attempting to burn an ISO made for CD would force the laser to skip like 6 DVD impressions and burn to one then skip 6 and burn to one, etc. The burners aren't designed to do that.

I don't know which version of Nero Burning ROM you have. I have v12.5 and I can tell you with certainty that it's impossible to burn a DVD with an ISO made to be burned to CD. The program won't allow you to even attempt this, hence the error messages you are receiving. I'm curious as to why you are attempting this in the first place. :confused

ISOs are a fancier ZIP-like 'container' that includes instructions for the original disk's sector structure. There are unzip utilities that will 'open' an ISO so the data-files can be saved to a hard-drive, then burned to any other media.

That doesn't change the fact that you can't burn a CD-formatted ISO onto a DVD.

I was totally incorrect in my first reply to this thread. This page explains how optical drives work and why a CD format ISO can't be burned to a DVD.

True but something tells me the goal is to burn the DATA CONTENTS of a CD onto a DVD blank. Your statement reminds of people who couldn't imagine burning a 5.25" floppy's contents onto the 1.44Mb 3.5" floppies.

You certainly do like to make assumptions

Oh? You think the desire to burn a disk has something to do with OTHER than getting access to its contents? Sheesh - YOU are the one making the huge assumption.

If it's the image of a bootable disc, unzipping and dumping the contents onto a blank DVD would defeat the primary purpose.

Of course, Sector Offsets and Boot Files DO exist for DVDs as well. So do those instructions.

I think what the OP is asking, and what ChristineBCW alluded to, is answered by converting the ISO he has that was originally on a CD so it will burn to a DVD. The program BurnAware the Major mentioned can do that, and a lot more.

I've got a utility program that used to be on a 3.5 floppy that I made bootable on a CD. I then at another time made it bootable on a DVD . . . huge waste of space, but I was out of CD's and a buddy needed the utility. No big hurdle to do this at all, with the right burning program. The computer's OS doesn't care what media the data is on, as long as it can read the the disk and the disk's boot routine.

Not used ImgBurn before, but I have heard good things about it.

I read the article Mdonah referenced at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_disc_drive and now I'm confused about the matter. Spad may be right (mostly right at least). Give it a read and see what you think. Unfortunately for the OP, the matter seems to be a moot point because he/she is using Nero, and for some reason Nero (through v12.5 at least) won't allow the user to burn certain ISOs to DVD, while allowing the same ISO to be burnt to CD. I'm guessing that the OP has since purchased some CDs and is not coming back to this thread, otherwise I'd spell out how to extract and rewrite the ISO so that Nero accepts it.

But, why persist in using Nero if another burning program will do the job, especially when that program is freeware?

Fair enough question. Yes, there are some excellent freeware apps.... and that's what I have used for the past year or so. Realize however that Nero is capable of packet writing, which is a pretty neat concept in burning technology:

I don't know of any freeware apps that do packet writing.
In any case, I ended up with a lot of coasters while packet-at-once burning, so I just use regular burning now.

I have had great success with Ashampoo ver. 6 free. It is extremely easy to use and has not failed me burning movies, iso's etc.
