Well, it's helpful to know your computer's specs & what operating system you're using to give a more detailed answer. As a start, you can use msconfig (type it in the 'run' window in the Start Menu) to keep any unneccesary programs from starting up when the computer starts. Many programs set themselves to run at startup, which really bogs the system down. If you're running Windows 2000, it doesn't have msconfig by default, but it can be downloaded if needed.

I forgot to mention that it only works for Windows XP. You didn't state what operating system you had.

Bootvis.exe is a performance tracing and visualization tool that Microsoft designed to help PC system designers and software developers identify performance issues for boot/resume timing while developing new PC products or supporting software.

Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.

Looks like Viper discourages the use of msconfig to disable startup items. The question was posed "Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?"

"The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no reason exists to justify disabling "everything."

Not "allowing" people to use msconfig reduces the flames and technical support questions in my inbox from people that fail to read the descriptions I offer with each service and the warnings I attach to them.

    Bo Bo :p
