I recently was given a Western Digital Caviar SE 160Gb Ultra EIDE Hdd. I used the software to copy my data from my old drive so I could exchange it out with the new. I purchased a Maxtor SATO/150 PCI Card to read the full capacity of the new drive. After the data was copied, I was instructed to switch out the drives. After rebooting it ask me to insert a boot disk. I have done fixboot & fixmbr but the drive seems to be listed as basic. I went into dos and ran diskpart to make the drive active but no luck. At the repair console I was given the option of installing XP. Should I just install? Any suggestions on how to proceed would be helpful.

Have you checked the jumpers? If it is asking you to insert a disk, it probably is not seeing the drive correctly.

The pci card says to jumper it in cable select position. The HDD says to put it as a master or single. Since it is the only drive should it be removed and run as a single? I reloaded Windows Xp and it still is asking for a boot disk. I just pop in the xp disk and away it goes and verything seems to work fine except for that. Any suggestions on how to setup the CMOS? There is not a selection for an add-on card or PCI in the boot sequence. Is there a site to get this so it is in the selections? Should I run the fixboot and the fixmbr again? Is there a site or a diagnostic program that can look at my pc and provide solutions to the boot problem and the others? Thanks

Yes, single or master should be the settings, cable select is very rare.

I removed the jumper and it still asks for a boot disk. It seems like this would be pretty simple to fix but have been at it for a week trying to figure it out. Should I run the repair console again and what would most likely fix the boot problem? Should I reload the PCI Card drivers each time I enter the repair console? It always asks if I want to load and SCSI or Raid drivers before going into the console.

Might want to review page 19 & 20 of the manual that came with the card, about Windows XP Installation. Perhaps the trick would be to have installed the card to the old drive's existing XP first, then cloned the old drive to the new, and proceed from there.
