making my computer faster

i am trying to make my computer faster i have CCleaner but i dont know what is safe to delete and what is not and i dont know what startup programs i need my operating system is vista

 

Could you please post a screenshot of CCleaner's startup list? That way, we can open a dialog on what can stay, and what can go. Personally, I toss out everything that isn't a security app, but this may not be right for you.

 

use "Wise Registry Cleaner" (also available for download here at marjor geeks).... it tells you what IS safe to remove and what MIGHT not be safe to remove....

as for the startup programs you can usually just google whatever file you aren't sure about and within the first few sites there will usually be one telling you what it does and if you need it or not

yes, it does say Print Scrn doesn't it? lol.... and i'm sure it does..... just hit the dang button, open up paint and hit paste..... see if the screen picture comes up....

You can either try saving it as a .GIF file (much smaller size) and retry posting, or you could upload it as is to an online host such as ImageShack, and then paste the address into the popup that appears when you press the 'Insert Image' button (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/editor/insertimage.gif)

Here, I've circled everything I would definitely get rid of in red, and everything you MIGHT want to get rid of in blue. Do keep in mind that this is what I would do personally, and ultimately, it is up to you to decide what stays and what goes.

Let's start with the red:

updatemgr is a program that looks for updates to Acrobat Reader. I find this very annoying. You can update acrobat manually, when needed.

The next four are Acer softwares. Acer Tour will show you features of your machine. Hopefully, you are mostly comfortable with it by now. Acer product registration isn't needed unless you, of course, want to register with Acer.

HP Software update looks for updates to drivers and applications for your printer. If the printer is working alright, I'd say this is fairly useless.

MSCONFIG is Windows system configuration utility. This is set to launch after you've made changes in there. Not needed, especially if you know how to launch it manually.

Adobe Reader Speed Launch - I don't think this works quite as advertised. I'd can it.

Empowering Technology Launcher - more Acer software most people never use.

HP Digital imaging monitor is used for quick access to diagnostics. Personally, I don't find it all that much more difficult to access this via control panel, when and if needed.

 

What seems slow?

That rthdvcpl is the Realtek HD Audio control panel that appears in system tray.

Soon (possibly next week?) Microsoft is supposed to be coming out with a couple of performance fixes for Vista via Windows Update. They are already public (KB938979, KB938194) for manual download.

(also for future reference, Accessories>Snipping Tool is a good screen capture program for Vista)

 

Don't forget that you need to configure msconfig before you delete the entries. Yes ccleaner does delete them from the startup list, but doesn't stop them from running at startup. It just makes them disappear.

 

Nah, CCleaner will delete the 'Run' key right out of the registry. I've watched it happen! (on XP... not so sure about Vista, you may be right - I'll test tonight! Cna't see why it would be different, though. What would be the point?)

 

@Mada_Milty: Maybe they changed it then. I deleted something when I first started using ccleaner over a year ago and then when I rebooted it was there running in startup again. That's good news then, it'll save me an extra step!

 

h when i remove startuo items from CCleaner they appear again when i exit and go back in.........and my computer is not really slow it just could be faster

That is an alarming amount to remove all at once in your registry. Registry Booster is an (in my words) aggressive registry tool.

Have you tried Wise Registry Cleaner? It is more user friendly and gives descriptions of what is safe and what "may" not be safe to remove.

Heh. It's true, but we can't forget the possibility that something RECREATES the registry key, or for problematic/corrupted registries, the change doesn't actually get made.

Certain versions of Office, for example, will insist that ctfmon.exe is in the 'Run' key, unless you uninstall it properly. (I'm seeing this behaviour now)

 

Here are some questions.
do you defrag.
do you use chdsk.
have you tried ram boosters.
and finally have you use a tweaking program?
then if you know you system specs please tell me i will be able to help.

and why should i remove MSconfig from startup

 

Do you use it every startup? It's just a bid to save a little more RAM and CPU time.

 

I always remove the safe to fix and leave the rest alone unless I recognize one that I am 100% sure is of no use.
