    Thanks in advance for you help. My son was using my computer last week and I'm afraid he may have downloaded some things he shouldn't have. I ran all the programs and some viruses were found and deleted, but the computer is running very slow still. Also, when the I was trying to save some of the logs in notepad, the computer would hang so I had to end up copying and pasting the logs elsewhere. I also do a lot of photography and had a program that would allow me to see thumbnails of my RAW photos and that's not working anymore either. I also seem to get strange results when I put my SD Card in to transfer files. Some of them show up, some of them don't. I believe I'm attaching everything I need. Thanks!

    Also, while trying to save some of these logs, Wordpad freezes and I get the message:

    Windows explorer is not responding

    Restart Program
    Close Program
    Wait for Program to respond

    I try to wait for the program to respond, but it doesn't and I have to end up restarting Windows Explorer. Here are the other logs.

    Thank you!

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Viewpoint Manager Service

    File::
    C:\Users\Carl\AppData\Local\fx3fhl5pp1033f564gedrb4n157m7048ko4c1r8w764
    C:\Users\Carl\AppData\Local\v48517mejip
    C:\Users\Carl\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\fx3fhl5pp1033f564gedrb4n157m7048ko4c1r8w764"
    C:\Users\Carl\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\v48517mejip
    C:\ProgramData\fx3fhl5pp1033f564gedrb4n157m7048ko4c1r8w764
    C:\ProgramData\v48517mejip
    c:\program files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Okay, so I did this and a log opened up. However, when I went to save the log and name it, it froze up again and I couldn't do anything but go into task manager and quit out of it so I didn't get to save the log. Then when I was going to open up the browser and reply to your post, the mouse froze up and I had to restart the machine. So my question is, do you want me to run that script KILLALL again? Thank you once again for your help!

    Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    We'll see if Combo actually removed those items.

    Your logs are clean, however, I do suggest you clean up your desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

    I suggest you post in the software forum for assistance with your slowness issues. You should answer these questions when posting:

    Please explain what operations are slow! For example answer the below:

    * Is boot up slow?
    * Is shutdown slow?
    * Is browsing/surfing slow?
    * Is downloading slow?
    * Is running any application?
    * Is it also slow in safe boot mode?
    * Also are any process showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time?
    * Anything else slow?

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    You've been very helpful. Unfortunately, things have gotten worse. I went in and took all my large files off the desktop. But when I went to open up my web browser (Chrome) to read the rest of your instructions, it took about a minute to start up. When I tried to do a Google search, I'll get the results I'm looking for but then when I try to click on any of the search results, I'm redirected to some bogus page that has paid ads related to my search. Then I tried to burn a DVD to start saving some of my files and it took the DVD burning software about 2 minutes to open. And it looks like all programs take 1 to 2 minutes to open. I also have my network printer hooked up to this computer and it's now not working on networked computers. When I tried to go in and share the printer (somehow that option got turned off) it won't allow me to. So the only thing I've done from your email is clear off the desktop. I'll go ahead and complete the rest of the items if you still think I should but I was wondering if you had any thoughts at this point. I'm really not even able to do much on the computer now. I'm typing this in on another. Thanks again....sorry for being such a pain.

    If you want and are able, get me a new C:\MGLogs.zip. I will double check them, but I really think this is a software issue at this point.

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.
    See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Yes it shows that you have an MBR infection. Do you have your Vista Bootable DVD so that you can boot to the System Recovery Environment where we can attempt to fix the MBR?

    No, I don't. Vista came installed on the machine. No OS disk was included. Any other options?

    Hi, I was able to burn the disc image and I'm able to boot from that disc. It boots up to a screen that says Windows Vista Language to install, Time and currency format and keyboard or input method and wants me to fill in those choices.
    Thanks again for your help!

    Notice: I would advise you to backup any important personal data before continuing. Most of the time there are no problems repairing the master boot record, but as with many instances of malware infections, things can and do sometimes go wrong.

    Yes what you observed when booting the dis was correct. The below link shows how things will look:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial147.html

    You need to work your way thru to the command prompt. Then in the command prompt window, you have to enter the below command and then press enter.

    bootrec /fixmbr

    If warned that replacing the MBR may be risking, press Y to continue
    Then after it completes ( which will be very fas ) type Exit to exit the Recovery Environment. Remove the CD and let Windows boot normally.

    Note: There is a SPACE AFTER bootrec

    After booting back into Windows, rerun MBRcheck and attach a new log so we can make sure the MBR was fixed. Then also check to see how everything is working now.
