    Hi,

    Originally came here due to a problem with an svchost.exe process sucking up my computer's memory and cpu, making it very difficult to do anything. After following the guide, that problem appears to have been resolved, however scans still point to the presence of a Zero Access Rootkit on the system.

    I am not seeing any symptoms present, however I am concerned and would just like to make 100% certain that any infections have been removed from the system.

    Attached are all scan log files, thanks very much in advance for any help provided!

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

    Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    When it opens, press the Scan button
    Now click the files/folder tab and locate these 7 detections:

    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] @ : C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\$08dbb119223a00cf8cbc2b9ae37c1be4\@ [-] --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] @ : C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3918058726-794002554-4020782338-1006\$08dbb119223a00cf8cbc2b9ae37c1be4\@ [-] --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\$08dbb119223a00cf8cbc2b9ae37c1be4\U --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] U : C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3918058726-794002554-4020782338-1006\$08dbb119223a00cf8cbc2b9ae37c1be4\U --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] L : C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\$08dbb119223a00cf8cbc2b9ae37c1be4\L --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FOLDER] L : C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3918058726-794002554-4020782338-1006\$08dbb119223a00cf8cbc2b9ae37c1be4\L --> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : C:\WINDOWS\Assembly\GAC\Desktop.ini [-] --> FOUND

    Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
    When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
    Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

    Re run both TDSSKiller and RogueKiller and show me the logs.

    Rerun Hitman and if it shows have it delete Malware, and Malware remnants.

    Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

    After reboot, check to see if your firewall is working.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Alright, all steps completed, only a couple wrinkles..

    Roguekiller scan did not show the following:

    [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : C:\WINDOWS\Assembly\GAC\Desktop.ini [-] --> FOUND

    So I could not select that one for deletion. Also, there were no checkboxes next to these files/folders, so I instead unchecked all of the registry items that the scan had found, then pressed delete.

    RKreport[2].txt was created after the scan but before deleting any files, so I instead attached RKreport[3].txt which shows what was deleted, along with the subsequent RKreport[4].txt from the rescan.

    All others ran fine. Not sure how to check if windows firewall is working; system tells me that it is on, I'm not sure if there's supposed to be a quick check to verify that or not.

    Computer seems to be running well; it is downloading / installing windows updates at the moment, so is running a bit sluggish, but that ought to go away as soon as its finished.

    Apart from that, I guess you'll be able to tell from the log files what else, if anything, needs to be done.. let me know!

    Your logs are clean. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/Windows_Logo_key.gif and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove, you can delete these files now.
    8. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Sounds good! Working through the final step now.

    It looks as if I've now been recruited by family to run this same process on a couple of other family desktops..

    However, I don't want to take too much advantage of these services without giving something back, could you tell me about donation options I have?

    I see the link in your signature for buying apparel, are there other ways of contributing to the website, or would buying a couple of t-shirts be the best way to say thanks?

    Please be rest assured that your comments alone are payment enough so to speak. Some people come here, get cleaned out and disappear without a single word. :)

    Okey doke! Well I may be back for a return trip soon enough, to clean up our other two household desktops.. One of which I'm afraid might be a real disaster; I don't think we've even attempted to boot it up in years due to the level of infection on it (yikes!).. but we've got some files on there we'd like to rescue so I guess its worth a shot!

    And maybe I'll swing by the apparel shop anywho, see if anything catches my eye ;)
