Malware risk of unsolicited free Flash memory devices?

I got a free thumb drive in the mail. It's branded by "AccessGroup.org", a major student lender, but obviously they did not manufacture it.

I've heard horror stories about some flash devices (specifically, "digital picture frames") being surreptitiously loaded with malware.

Is there a way I can rule out that possibility and feel safe using this free gift?
