MalwareBytes error

A friend has MalwareBytes (the full paid version) and it's great except for an error that started out of the blue about 2-3 months ago. Automatic updates to longer work, but if he tries to update manually, the updates install perfectly. Also, when he tries to make any changes to the program like the time of day to download/install updates, he gets the error attached below. The changes 'stick' and if the app is closed and re-opened, the new settings are shown. We have tried uninstalling, re-installing, CCleaner, other reg cleaners and file cleaners, we have installed the newest release (v1.32) and still have the same problems. The main issue is the lack of automatic updates. I have posted in the MBAM forums also and got no-where, so I figured I'd post here and see what happens....
    Thanks!

Did you or your friend check for viruses or spyware?

Also, since he has a license, have you thought of uninstalling MBAM thoroughly and cleaning any leftover reg entries, and then reinstalling a fresh current copy? I assume that all you need do is enter the ID & Key. Worth a shot.

    The PC is clean.
Uhhhh.... yeah.... did you read my first post?
In addition to all that, he has also manually looked through the registry and removed any entries related to 'MalwareBytes'. If I remember correctly, he said there were some entries named "LEGACY_MALWAREBYTES_something?" that could not be deleted....

dlb, I see you've posted in the forum.
I'm not sure if you read through the postings in the auto update not working thread so I'll post one thing you may not have seen.
Have a look to see where the person with the problem is getting the updates from.

    Also check the time
apparently that is the default and the server gets overloaded then.

@ plodr: yeah, I read through all 4 pages before I decided to post over in the MBAM forums. The weird thing is that it worked fine for months then one day just stopped working (apparently). Nobody knows exactly when it stopped working because there was no reason to check it, 'cuz it was working. There's no error when it's supposed to auto-update, it just doesn't do 'em anymore regardless of what the time is set to... which is when we do get the error; when any settings are changed is when that error pops up. But it doesn't seem to have any negative effects: any settings we change bring up the error, but the changs stick. Strange. But it's not a big deal really, he just manually updates once or twice daily. My friend brought me in on this problem 'cuz I recommended MBAM to him and he's not the fastest drive in the RAID if you know what I mean. He's OK with basic PC use and I've 'trained' him against clicking on things that are free (like "click here for your free laptop") and against clicking on shiny blinking things (like "you're the 999,999th visitor! You've won a prize") and told him how to manually update until (or if) we get the problem solved....
    LOL

Not a big deal ;) I skim and overlook stuff all the time :-o That why almost all my posts have been edited 3 or 4 times each LOL

Thanks dlb. Me reads too fast sometimes. :) Let us know if/how you get it fixed. I'm curious as to the cause. :major

Well, I was sifting through the MBAM forums and discovered they have a "MBAM Clean Utility" for installs gone awry and whatnot. For those interested, it can downloaded from this direct link. We're going to try it tonight and see if it makes a difference. I posted a link to it in the MBAM forums for another dude having the same problem; he used it and said it didn't help him with the exact same issue we're having, but I'm going to try it anyway... *fingers crossed*

My husband's version stopped auto-updating so I had to manually do it. (I've told him to ignore error messages from Malwarebytes and AVG 8 because sometimes the servers are down or the computer tries to check before his internet connection is working). The tray icon didn't work either. Then, it started working again - I think after another revision was downloaded.
That saved me a trip to the forum.

I see a new version of MBAM just came out today (Jan 14 2009)... version 1.33... so we did a full uninstall, ran the MBAM clean tool (see link above) and reinstalled using the new version.... :banghead NO CHANGE! :cry I think he'll just have to live with this until the next fresh OS install....

Could the firewall or something else be blocking them?

Is it Vista? Have you tried right clicking MBAM and choosing Run as Administrator?

Problem has been solved. It turns out that MalwareBytes relies on the Windows built-in Task Scheduler. Personally, I find it a bit odd that it does, since many advanced users turn off this service, and most (if not all) other security apps use their own scheduling for updates and scan scheduling. For example, Avira's AntiVir continue's to update itself automatically completely independent of the Task Scheduler. So, with MBAM, once the Task Scheduler service was re-enabled, the problem disappeared. The fix was discovered by a member over in the MBAM forums. His name is (of course) "geekpro"! LOL

(if anyone gives a :crap here's a link to my MBAM forum thread http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9778&st=0 )
