    Hi,
Ive currently over the last few years been using AVG Internet Security but to be honest this year’s renewal is £75

Sometimes when I start pc I’m told I need to update & it’s supposed to do it itself so with a few other things I’m starting to loose interest with it.

Im thinking of Malewarebytes so can you advise what I need to look into for the same kind of thing as I think I want to change now.

    Thanks.

Malwarebytes has 4 protections: web, malware, ransomware and exploit protection. Fortunately, I have 5 lifetime licenses. I purchased the first license in
2008 for my husband's computer. I did this after I used the product to clean someone's computer of malware. When I saw how well it worked, I decided to purchase and install on my husband's computer.

Go for basic, you don't need a VPN thrown in.

When you download it, there is a 7 - 14 day trial. If you decide you don't want to buy it, it still works BUT you have to update it yourself and run weekly scans yourself.

Click the Advanced install if you don't want a desktop icon. I rely on the icon near the clock so I don't want a desktop icon too. Also I always opt out of Browser Protection. I've seen posts where it might interfere with protections that browsers have within them. You can try it and if you find it is problematic, disable it under addons.

    Hi,
Ive had it installed since you reply above thanks.

In my settings ive seen a message which reads,
Upgrade to premium for real time protection

Can you advise what that is please.
Ive checked all the options in the free version where is shows premium only etc & dont think i need any of them so not sure what the above is.

At its simplest, whenever MB scans your system the free version will remove anything it finds which it reckons should not be there. When you upgrade to premium it intercepts these same items and prevents them from being entered at all.

Ah so stops them before being downloaded to pc

    makes sense then to upgrade

Not quite - it keeps them in the guardhouse. In computer parlance they are quarantined.[/QUOTE]

    So best to upgrade ?
I need to soon remove the current avg and need to be certain that should I click on something which might be malware etc I need it to be stopped etc.

Opinions will vary on what is best. Personally I'm OK with the free version and just running a scan now and again. But if you do not feel confident you know how to avoid malware, and are OK with the cost, then upgrading is probably best

    Ok cheers.

I upgrade manually & do scan on a regular basis.

I have used Windows Defender as my antivirus for years. No problems. I also have a lifetime subscription to Malwarebytes but only use it as an on-demand scanner every 2 or 3 months. Malwarebytes has become bloated too and it is sometimes noticeably slowing down my computer so I finally just turned it off. Windows Defender consistently scores very high on the AV Test website.
    https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/
    https://www.av-test.org/en/antiviru...0/august-2021/microsoft-defender-4.18-211416/

The only thing you get with paid antivirus these days is all of the extra and often unnecessary crap they throw in with the subscription to make it seem more robust. That and tech support. Most of that, including tech support, you can get for free here at Majorgeeks. Even on computers that have decent specs these antivirus suites can make it run slow because of all of the junk running in the background. You don't need browser guards, shopping alerts, software updaters, ransomware alerts, PC maintenance, backup solutions, etc, etc, etc. for the antivirus to work.

If the antivirus works the way it should then that is all that matters. Anything that does not actually block/quarantine a virus is unnecessary. Any alert that is not telling you a virus or potential virus was blocked/quarantined is unnecessary.

This just my opinion but the only extra that is useful is a VPN (for some people, IMO casual home users don't need one 24/7) but I think you should get that as a stand alone product and not part of an antivirus suite.

Keep Windows up to date. Windows security updates block a lot of known malware before it even has a chance to execute + Windows Defender + Common sense and you should be fine.

4 Ways to Turn On or Off Windows Defender Real-time Protection. Be sure to uninstall the other antivirus first and then run AVG Clear so you are sure it is actually gone. Antivirus are notorious for not completely uninstalling.

Hi, sorry but I would never touch Malwarebytes, it slows your system so much, you especially feel it when you are browsing!.
I know Microsoft Defender is very good, and more than enough for basic need.
Bitdefender Total Security is my choice+Voodoo-Shield Free & Adguard Desktop+a few on demand scanners like: KVRT, Sophos Virus Removal Tool, HitmanPro & Roguekiller(lifetime License with all Real Time Protection turned off) & as it was mentioned in this Thread: a good paid VPN.
I would recommend: NordVPN, VyprVPN or Adguard VPN(great if you have Adguard Desktop they are good together IMHO.
All this is a matter of preference off course.:)
