*sighes* okay, so first time round it was my video card that wasnt working, now my sound card doesnt work (but it did before) its a Creative SBLive! and the driver in HardDrake confirms this, but when using XMMS im getting no playback, though the little EQ thingie is bobbing up and down. Any ideas?

Run modprobe emu10k1 as root and then start up xmms as root (Just to make sure). Works?

call me dumb, but how would i go about doing that

Start up an xterm and then run su and enter in your root password, then run "modprobe emu10k1" and then run "xmms" to start up xmms as root and see if you can play files...

EDIT: Actually, first try to su and run xmms, if that doesn't work then try modprobe emu10k1, maybe you jsut can't play musci as a user.... (Probably a perms problem in /dev)

it says (from modprobe) no such device..
it gives me the hint that it might be an invalid IO or IRQ parameter.

    What might this mean?

Have you also tried running xmms as root with no modprobe? What does just running modprobe with no options show? Try installing support the chipset... I believe it's emu10k1.sf.net But Tell me the 2 things above first.

yep, xmms doesnt work under root either...

modprobe says : "Nothing to load??" so i do modprobe /* and it says...a lot... and i dont know how to copy from a xterm session.

modprobe /* will just be a ton of errors (I think) to copy just highlight it, then open up kate, gnotepad or whatever text editor and middle or right click and it should paste, or just do "modprobe > ~/logfile". Does modprobe by itself give anything? I would personally ahte telling you to install supprot for the emu10k1 (SBLive!) chipset support as I hate doing it and it comes with Slackware so I'm spared the deep deep mental trauma...

    *crys*

SIGH so what to do? Will i need to install this darned thing or what? your right i do get a whole bunch of errors... cant i just get it re-detected (like it was when i installed 9l.1

  10. Vlad902

    Vlad902 Guest

I don't know about the detection thing and stuff, might want to ask on an Linux-specific forum for that, never done Mandrake... Why did you re-install? Did you remove any packages that you didn't on the first install? Did you do anything different in the install, something must have happened for it not to detect the sound card... Checked the speaker cable (Sorry, I'm at a groping for solutions stage :D)

i formatted the partition and re-installed to update from 8.2 to 9.1, and yep works fine in windows just not Mandrake. *sighes* im gunna go back to windows for a bit ill solve this dilema at some other point...

    Vlad902 Guest

dcom.c also works just fine in Windows ;) *cough* I know Mandrake HAS to come with emu10k1 support, hell Slack comes with it, I mean it's like the most common chipset there is... That's fux0red...

lol! actually i rather like Mandrake and im going to be running a web server on it pretty soon (well, RedHat actually, but Mandrake seems like RedHat with stabiliser wheels) so i thought i should get farmiliar.

It SHOULD have em10k1 support and i think it does but it doesnt, well, work! it does know what the card is and i think there are drivers installed for it, it just not making any noise..

  14. Vlad902

    Vlad902 Guest

Actually now that you say no noise, usually XMMS gives an error when no driver is installed... Try fux0ring with teh settings or try doing mpg321 (or mpg123 I forget which) /home/goldfish/music/blah.mp3 I'm not sure if mpg123/321 comes with Mandrake though... I think it is picking it up but like you said not emitting noise... w3rd, try fux0ring with teh settings on xmms too.

Is it JUST xmms, or all sound? Do you have xmms-mp3 installed? It usually doesn't ship with it anymore, but it should yell at you if it isn't there.

Maybe you should try to upgrade to a newer kernel? The MDK9.1 default kernel has some bugs. I had no problems with my SBLive! under MDK 9.1. However, my network card had issues :(

If you are planning to run a web server, you might consider www.debian.org as well ;)

    I wouldn't. Debain is a #$@%! to install.

Thanks for the input guys :)

Uhm, no noise as in no noise whatsoever, like, no startup doodads (which i know are there) or anything.

Newer kernel, you have to be joking.. i dont even know what do DO with a new kernel, let alone how to upgrade to one. I know i should have researched a bit before i dived in, but hey.

Debian, eh? Hmm, i shall look into that....

oh yeah and when i shut down it says "no sound card at snd-card01" to 06....

I know the card works okay because im using it in windows...

hmm, ill play with some settings... but ill probably be a bit over caucious cause i duno what im doin!

I'm willing to bet on incompatible drivers.

That's really annoying, because in Linux drivers need to be installed when you compile the kernel or set up as loadable modules. Unfortunately, I only have fleeting ideas on how to do that.

I'm kinda new at all this myself, though. I'm pretty much in the same boat with my College Linux install, although that was exacerbated by them shipping CL with gcc 2.95.3 and compiling the kernel with gcc 3.2.2.

Open a shell window and switch to root with su - (+return)

    Now run rpm -Uvh ftp://mandrake.redbox.cz/Mandrake-updates/9.1/RPMS/kernel-2.4.21.0.25mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

This should upgrade to the new kernel

The default installer of Debian 3.0 is terrible, but there are a few alternatives. For example: Bonzai Linux 2.1. Bonzai Linux is basically Debian 3.0 (stable) with a newer Kernel, KDE 3.1, and an enhanced Debian installer.

There is also Knoppix, an installable Linux LiveCD based on the unstable release of Debian Linux. However, I would recommended the stable release of Debian for a server.

This worked for me when I had a similar problem.

    Open the KDE Control Center.
Then go to System and open Linux Kernel.

From there go to the Sound portion.

Then find the CreativeSBLive entry. Make sure there isn't a red X.
    Mine has gears (module).
    Then click apply.

    Try rebooting. Hopefully that works.

Debain was about as pointlessly complex (from my newbie status) as FreeBSD. I understand that they want to give you total control, but they should have defaults or automatic settings. I haven't tried Gentoo yet, but I hear that's just as bad. A friend of mine is on day three of the install.

    Here's what I've learned:
    1. Linux is all about fighting the interface because the software designers are too busy coordinating OSS to make a usable interface... and they're not getting paid. Things get to a "does it work?" point and then cease development.

    2. Windows is all about fighting the bugs because the software designers are too busy fixing old bugs and writing new bugged software and supporting every standard under the sun (modified slightly so MS can own it) to fix the bugs. Things get to a "will we make money doing it?" point and then development stops.

    3. Mac is all about searching for software... because there are no software designers. Things don't get much of anywhere, since all your apps are Linux or Windows ports.

What about photoshop? from my understanding that was a Mac port ;)

okay, ive suddenly got sound for no apparent reason. Does this usually constitute for a solution in linux ?:p

You did something, it doesn't just change randomly, think of what you did before.

i turned it on... that was about it... i dont remember doing anything else that would apply after a reboot..... :S

So you're saying a Mac is a $4000 box that repaces paper and colored pencils? ;)

  30. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

coloured pencils, airbrushes, stencil sets, a photographic dark room, a ......

Come to think of it actually, it booted up and did a sort of integrity check and it fixed somthing but it went past so quick i didnt see exactly what it was... so that was probably it..
