well with all the fuss about the new ubuntu thats released, i thought i would add my bit,

mandriva 2010 has been released (4th november) and its smooth,

    kernel 2.6.31.5, kde 4.3.2,
java is 1.6.0.16, flash is 10.0.32.18, ff 3.5.4,
    openoffice 3.1.1

as is usual with mandriva all non free software has to be added to your repositories via easyurpmi (plf)
all official software is added at initial first boot without any user intervention - along with root and user passwords (this is obviously done by the user),
sudo has to be enabled in software management, then configured (for those who need sudo)

flawless install on a 40gb partition took around 15 mins, then another 10 mins to configure my desktop and add 3D,
only problem i had was kmix, removing it from the panel caused it to autostart and appear on my desktop at boot,
annoying, but adding it back to my panel and auto-hiding it resolved the problem,

dragon player (for vids) needs the win32 codecs from plf - but this is not really a problem as codeina will advise you to download the relevant codec and give you a link to plf (the same codec can be found in your repositories, if plf has been added),
i use xine, this doesn't use codeina (at least not on minerolleyes)

audio is via amarok, audacious or xmms (buggy on mine), among others,
amarok (2.2) has less configuration than earlier versions so i've switched to audacious,

for the hardware watchers, ksensors is not available in the repositories anymore, its gkrellm now - but it still uses lm-sensors,

as i am a multimedia sort of chap then i use these as well,

dvdrip, mandvd (this has a gui that has to be started from a terminal - or a short cut to the favourites from /usr/bin), devede, k3b, digikam and showfoto (in my opinion better than gwenview) - all these have to be enabled and have plf software,
    and then there's gimp 2.6.7,
for fractal art there is xaos and quat, blender is everyones favourite 3D modeling software,
    the list could go on,

i've been using mdv2010 since before the official release and i've had one "issue" - kmix,
i've found mdv2010 to be very stable and smooth (with extended ooooooo:-D),

no fuss, no mess, just mandriva,
