    hi,

i am running a dual boot system w2k/mandriva using the grub loader, radeon 9550 vid card

the problem is i have just updated my mandriva and i think one of the updates has messed with my vid card, my w2k is all ok but when i boot into mandriva i find i have lost my 3D, i lost my background but replaced it, i cannot drag and drop unless its an icon, i have lost my 'cube', i cannot use matise, i have lost all my headers (file headers and firefox headers) which means i cannot 'reduce', i can only close a window by file/close, i can have multiple windows open but cannot swap between them, if i use the 'net with mandriva its locking up if multiple things are moving (eg the smilies to the right),

anybody any ideas how to right this ? can i 'roll back' ?

    thanks for any help

Try running the command XFdrake to assure you are running the correct graphics card and monitor drivers, and also, possibly, not any on board graphics. Upgrade software with Synaptic as needed, I did mark and apply all upgrades, not anymore, just as needed. If it doesn't sort it self out I do a reinstall. I use LILO and boot Linux through the Windows bootloader ntldr, my MBR stays the way she is. Good Luck, Linux is a PITA, but I love her just the same.

    Mandriva uses Synaptic?

The Linux forum is pretty lenient as its a hobby OS, but reinstalling without hardly trying anything isn't learning.

If the 'cube' as its put, is gone, why not start it from the CLI?

The first question is, what compositing engine is running?

    Compiz?
    Beryl?
    Compiz-Fusion?

No title bars is an indicator that the Window manager isn't working, once again pointing at the above.

Are you using KDE, Gnome, or XFCE?

    To start from Command line:

Open Konsole, or terminal of choice.

    Compiz:
    Code:
    compiz-start &
    Beryl:
    Code:
    beryl-manager &
    Compiz-Fusion:
    Code:
    ccsm &
If it doesn't work, post the errors here. Many terminal applications allow copy and paste.

If you are using KDE and need the default window manager back try this:

Once again using a terminal, type

    Code:
    kwin --replace
    Gnome:
    Code:
    metacity --replace
For the above, leave the terminal open after running the command, while testing results. If it works post back. If it doesn't, give the error.

Reinstalling without working on it teaches nothing and in the Linux world, merely dooms you to repeat your mistakes, and end up in a reinstall loop. At that point, you may as well head back to Windows.

    hi,

thanks for the replies (and the telling off )

i've been at it a few days with no joy, apart from 'it may be a corrupt windows registry' and 'install 2008, it will fix it',

i think it maybe a driver problem with my vid card, some answers -

1 - compiz (when i try compiz --replace, i get the message 'glx-sgix-fbconfig is missing)

    2 - gnome

(someone suggested i check my /etc/x11/xorg.conf to see when it was last modified - 13 may 2007)

what i did try was go to hardware and found the graphics card i've got, i clicked on 'test' and my screen went black, left it for a while but it stayed the same, had to use the button to re-boot,
when i got back into mandriva all i had was a blue screen with an 'x' for the cursor, left it a while and had to use the button to shut down,

this was the last straw, so i booted from my live cd and re-installed but when i booted into mandriva properly all the user setting and problems are still there

I wasn't telling you off. I was trying to show that reinstalling (that was previously suggested) doesnt answer questions, it leaves them there to repeat themselves.

    hi,

this may seem a bit thick but i never installed any drivers, as far as i know its using the ones in windows,
but if you could tell me where to look, i could tell you,

the windows one is radeon 9550 - driver version 8.162.0.0

its definately not using Windows drivers, as thats a completely incompatible OS.

I've had a similar problem with ubuntu 7.10 - it was necessary for me to use Synaptics to force compiz to upgrade and then download the Compiz Advanced Manager to adjust the windows so that they had titlebars and stuff again.

That irks me about the 'buntus.

They should all be including ccsm.

    hi,

    this is now really annoying,

the progress so far - i have removed grub from the mbr and re-installed mandriva (which i know will keep all the settings), but this time i asked it to boot from hda5, re-booted and ran bootpart, edited my boot.ini (after backing it up), re-booted and was presented with 2 options to boot from, w2k and c/documents and settings/administrator.......

tried the c/d+c one but got 'ntoskrnl.exe is missing', used ctrl, alt and delete to re-boot and went into w2k to edit my boot.ini and find out where i have gone wrong, tried for hours and don't seem to be getting anywhere,

    any ideas ?

    hi,

i think i am doing something wrong on install, just downloaded mandriva 2008, burnt it to cd,
deleted my previous mandriva install and installed 2008 on the partition,
i used the lilo and boot on hda5 from the options,
cannot get bootpart to add the boot line to my boot.ini file,
re-booted with the live cd and went to control center/boot/set up autologin to automatically login,
up popped a window saying 'no bootloader found, creating a new configuration', i waited but nothing happened,
clicked on cancel and tried 'set up boot system', got the same message
this is probably something i am missing (installing wrong ?)

    any pointers ?
    ta
