Manually Trim Ssd That Windows Thinks Is An Hd.

I have a WD My Passport external drive.

This is an SSD drive, but Windows 10 considers it to be a standard hard drive.
Windows will read and write to the drive without problem, and there doesn't seem to be any way to force windows to see it as the SSD it really is, so I'm not opening THAT can of worms.

The one issue is the trim function. There isn't any way to run TRIM on my external. Is there a way around this? Or, given that the drive is working, should I worry about it?

TRIM is usually blocked by 'bad' drivers, in this case, probably the USB or the chip in the ext. WD. Contact/check WD for updated software to run/enable TRIM, and/or update (or rollback) the USB drivers relevant to the connection in use. Occasional connection via a lower USB# might allow TRIM to run.

 

How do you know Windows thinks it is a hard drive? What version of Windows are you using?

 

What he ^ said. The WD My Passport comes in both hard drive and SSD models. Please run CrystalDiskInfo, do a screen capture of the output, and post it here. We can use that to confirm what type of drive is in the external chassis.

I did the smart thing, and emailed the manufacturer. The version I am using is, as per them, one of their first, it is an HDD, NOT an SSD, which came out later.
