Hi,

I have spent the last 12 hours getting rid of a wide range of Malware. Thanks to the expert guidance from MG.com I seemed to have cracked it!

One area I did have problems with was running combofix. It kept telling me that AVG was running and I couldn't completely turn it off. Any ideas on how to completely remove it. I was thinking of installing the Comodo package instead.

Welcome to Major Geeks.
You may have had AVG protection running on your machine.
It needs to be turned off or disabled before it can be removed.
I personally like and use Avira AntiVir.
Good that you got straightened out.

1) Click on Start, Control Panel
2) Open Add/Remove Programs
3) Find AVG in the Programs list and highlight it
4) Click Remove and follow the prompts to uninstall AVG Free

 

AVG and other security software leave often remnants on the computer. Best is to use AVG's removal tool: http://www.avg.com/download-tools Select the appropriate tool. Run it and reboot.

Use CCleaner as a mop up tool after that, use it's cleaner and registry. make sure you save a backup of CCleaner's registry. http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html

 

Well a few things have happened since my original post.

1. Hijacker is still there so I guess I have some more things to do just yet.

2. Have tried all of the stated options for AVG and now all I get is this:

Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005

Can't seem to uninstall even with thier own removal software. I am now with out any AV which is a worry. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming you already have CCleaner installed as you have been removing Malware. Try running its registry cleaner a few times until there are no more entries to fix (ensuring to back up every time).
