Many Websites Now Not Resolving With Any Browser... Wtf?

Hey all, a few days ago, on one of my machines, many, many common websites stopped resolving (youtube, twitter, FB, NYT, etc.), as well as multiple online services like dropbox, G Drive, etc. This was the case across all browsers, pings, etc., and only affected this machine and not others on the same router. Interestingly, some sites resolve quickly and just fine (like Google).

We suspected malware and I posted in the thread here as I've done in the past with great results, but after looking at the logs chaslang determined I have nothing.

I have no idea what could cause this- it persists through reboots of both machine and router. Network adapter seems to be working fine. Have tried another access point (iPhone on tether mode) and same issue. And again, some sites load up like lightning, while the vast majority just hang there or load excruciatingly slow.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks all!

I'm not clear if you are wired directly to the router or using some sort of hardware repeater (access point?).

If hard wired to the router, try another router port and a different cable.

If using some sort of hardware repeater, connect the computer directly to the router.

The results of the above with determine if
    a) the router port is bad
    b) the ethernet cable is bad
    c) the hardware access point/repeater is bad

The question we are asking is your system on a wifi setup or is it hardwired through a Cat 5???

    Do you have wifi.???

Does the wifi have a good pass word setup.???

Does it have a pass word.???

Who is your ISP internet service provider.???

What windows are you running currently.???

What browsers are you testing and what are you using.???

What sites are you trying to reach.???

If they said it was clean than there should be no infections on the system.Which could have caused the problem.

    There are two options here.

Option one is that there is some thing wrong with the wireless or your modem.

Or two some thing with your computers and other stuff that is connected.

Edit: Sounds like this could be a DNS problem.

Oh and have you tried to reset the modem / wireless by touching the button on the back of it for 10 seconds.

    Some updates and info:

First the updates- I actually tried tethering again to the iPhone and sites loaded just fine (but wifi, still no luck). I also tried connecting the machine directly to the modem instead of to the wireless router, same issue. And, I rebooted both the modem and router, no luck.

    In answer to questions:

    - Do you have wifi.???
    Yes.

Does the wifi have a good pass word setup.???
    Yes.

Does it have a pass word.???
    Yes.

Who is your ISP internet service provider.???
    Time Warner.

What windows are you running currently.???
    7.

What browsers are you testing and what are you using.???
Chrome (latest) and IE as backup. Both fail (along with pinging).

What sites are you trying to reach.???
Google, NYT, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo. Of those listed, only Google loads.

If they said it was clean than there should be no infections on the system.Which could have caused the problem.
We didn't clean or remove anything, they just looked at the logs, so no action was taken.

Option one is that there is some thing wrong with the wireless or your modem.
If so, it's somehow affecting only my machine. All other machines on the same system are fine.

Or two some thing with your computers and other stuff that is connected.
Very unlikely- tethering to my iPhone instead of the wireless router fixes it all.

Edit: Sounds like this could be a DNS problem.
Almost certainly. I did try setting Google as my DNS lookup, but that didn't fix it :\.

Oh and have you tried to reset the modem / wireless by touching the button on the back of it for 10 seconds.
    Oh yes, multiple times.

Sounds like your ISP is either blocking you or throttling you.

    Do you download a lot.???

Might want to call Time Warner and have them come out and fix the problem.Could be your wires need to be replaced and your modem.

If your wires are more than 2 years old than most likely that they are going bad. When you get a bad wire it can mess up every thing.

I had the same issue with Armstrong cable a while back.I replaced all the wires in my house except the one on the telephone pole. And had them replace the modem.I have not had a issue since.

    Try replacing your wires.

If your wires are more than 2 years old and get moved around a lot than most likely that can be the cause of the computer.

This is the cheap option first.Have Time Warner Cable come out and check the wires and modem.Since it's there system.I would recommend on having them replace the wires and the modem.

Some problems like this are caused by the wires being old and brittle and can break.I have had this issue some time ago with armstrong cable. And have not have had an issue since than.

The main problems they told me is that the ends of the wires need to be replaced after so long be cause the wires start dropping the signal for unknown reason. And there should all so be a filter on that line just for the modem.Be cause it can all so mess up the signals for the TV as well.

In this case i would have them replace all the wires and the one on the telephone pole and modem.Should only take about and hour or two at the most. And if your system is hooked up to 3 or 4 way tv splitter's they all so need to be replaced as well.

    This should fix the problem.

If this has been happening more often like once a week or more than it's time to call ISP.

Make sure you replace all your Cat cable as well.

Well, I *finally* solved it. This one was a real doozy-

    - All machines on connection (Time Warner) fine except for problem machine.
    - Problem machine fine when tethered to iPhone (Verizon), not fine when connected to Time Warner via wifi, directly to modem, etc.
    - Further diagnosing determined problem machine, on Time Warner, failing on IPv6 sites but not IPv4 ones (for example, purple.com vs. notpurple.com).
    - Every manner of DNS changing, clearing, IPv6 disabling, etc. tried- nothing.
    - Just now came across a posting online where it was someone's antivirus (though on OSX) causing similar issues.
    - So on a lark decided to look at MBAW, aka the only protector I have running besides Windows Defender, and disabling all realtime protection.
    - TADAAAA!!!! All sites now working. WTF, MB, seriously.. WTF? :)

Do you mean MBAM ? If so are you running v2 or version 3?

I have not upgraded to v 3 because I still feel there are too many bugs.

I have Malwarebytes 3.0 and i don't have an issue but with my Gmail redirect message. But of course i don't use the paid version.I hate real time protectors be cause a lot of web sites are perfectly fine.

The only problem i see with malwarebytes as of now and other AV's is that there all saying that some or many Third party programs are coming up as PUP and malwarebytes blocks them.

You might try downloading and installing MBAM anew to see if things clear up with it.
