mass data stick in Win98?

I want to transfer data from an old Win98 computer to a new XP and hoped to do this with a data stick, only the Win98 doesn't recognize the new hardware. The data stick I have is a Toshiba USB2.0. My understanding is that the Win98 usb ports are 1.0. Is it a driver problem that it can't be recognized? If so, can I download the driver somewhere? Or could the Win98computer simply be too old?
    Thanks for suggestions.:)

Did you try the Toshiba web site for Win98 drivers? I have used a couple of different Lexar media mass storage devices on Win98, but have had to DL drivers.

    It is a driver issue.

My searches have not been very productive, although I've located a lot of drivers. I don't know how too combine a search for win98, toshiba and whatever the data stick is called. Is it called memory stick? In any case, this is where I could use a little more help, how to narrow down where I might find the driver. You've given me some new ideas, though. Thanks so much!

Easy way, take the drive out of the 98 machine, place in the other if a desktop, and be done with it.

It doesn't look like any of those. It seems to have a serial number rather than a parts number. I suspect the "name" of the item was on the packaging. I did locate a Lexar and if I can get help locating where to download the drivers, that might be easiest.
    Thanks for your help.

Sorry, this didn't make any sense to me. Why would I do that?

I believe he was suggesting that you take the hard drive out of the 98 machine and put it into the other as a slave drive ...(OR take it to circuit city or best buy and let them do it for you!! Twit!!):) :)

Ack! Don't take it to Best Buy, unless you are a millionaire. They charge way too much. I really don't think physically moving the HD is the best answer for you.

If you have a Lexar USB drive, then drivers should be easy to find.

Go ahead and give me the serial number from the Toshiba and a model number and/or serial number for the Lexar. I will help you find drivers.

No cd-r on the 98 machine. And we have talked about a cross-over cable.

I am also having a time finding any USB storage drivers on the Toshiba web site.

Here is what i found on driverguide.com:

Do you have a digital camera per chance? You could perhaps use it to move files as well.

When you get a Lexar, first make sure that it is 98 compatible, then let us know and we can probably find drivers more easily.

the driver's 1.3 megabytes? I will check the Lexar for price. The other idea to hook up the win98 harddrive in the new xp computer using an adapter may also work. I'm also working on the idea of one of the cables.
thanks so much for your info!

Out of curiosity, how much data are you trying to move?

Have you got a digital camera? If so, perhaps a picture of the USB drive might be helpful.

    not much
the old drive was 8 Gb, the new one is something like 80. I doubt I have more than 3 or 4 Gigs to move.

So you do have a a digital camera? What type? Can you use it to move your files? Some work just like a mass storage device.

Now, just about an hour ago, a worker at Office Depot told me that there are Win98 USB mass storage device drivers at Microsoft.com. I always thought that they were device manufacturer specific. I asked him because they had some 512 MB flash drives on sale for $15, but I told him that i prefered that it would work (i.e. I could get drivers) for Win98. He assured me that it would work, and even said that he has done so. I am looking on MS.com right now.

Well, now i have the same problem as you abri. I can't find Win98 drivers for this damn thing either.

My problem is not as major as yours though, as I do not NEED drivers, just WANT them.

I found a data stick where you can go to the company's website for the drivers, however, I need to put SE on the WIN98 computer. Know where I could get a copy of SE? The data stick is by the company Kingston at www.kingston.com/drivers/dti98, however, they no longer support Win98, so I have to see if this one will still work.

Are you sure that you don't have Win98SE??

What kind of digital camera do you have?

How large is the memory card?

well, that's a cool website, pics and everything. I have a fujipix camera, but it is SLOW! so I'm still not giving up on the data stick, only that I need to find SE now for the WIN98. lol ... I also bought a parallel file transfer cable plus I am still thinking of just moving the hard drive over. One way or the other though, I have to get all this equipment to talk to each other.
