Hello. I recently installed a XP Pro on my computer and I'm unable to update the mass storate controller driver when I'm in the device manager. I have an ABIT KG7-RAID with the latest BIOS so I don't understand why I can't update the mass storage controller.
The error reads: "The driver installation for this device is missing a necessary entry. This is because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor."
My system uses the HighPoint-Tech RAID drivers HPT370/372. But when I check under the device manager, it lists the manufacturer as "UNSUP."
Does anyone know how or where I can update the mass storage controller drivers?

    Thanks for your help.

And where did the drivers come from/what are they listed as when you downloaded them? Did you get them from the manufacturers website (if so motherboard or controller?)

The highpoint-tech raid drivers came with the ABIT KG7-Raid motherboard I purchased a few years ago. I never downloaded them.

The only thing I have downloaded is the latest BIOS update from ABIT. And the only reason I did that was to enable full capacity of my new 300Gig Seagate hard drive. I was only getting 137G capacity before the BIOS update.

But I am having trouble updating the Raid Mass Storage Controller driver. It has an exclamation point under the Device Manager.

    Any suggestions?

Ah, when you said you were updating the drivers I assumed that you had downloaded the latest versions. Which might not be a bad idea ;)

Where are you loading the drivers from? Is it the CD or the RAID setup floppy disk? In either case, it'd still be better to download new versions to be sure they are right for your operating system and service pack.

If I've done my research correctly, I think you will find the required drivers in the VIA HyperionPro 4in1 Driver Pack. But you'd need to double check that.

    Hope that helps :)

Goldfish, thanks for your prompt response and the suggestion. The VIA HyperionPro 4in1 Driver Pack seemed to be correct but upon downloading it and installing it, my mass storage driver is still showing an exclamation mark under the device manager.

Can you uninstall the Mass Storage Controller device fromt the device manager, then restart and allow it to redetect? If it does not automatically re-detect the device, run the New Hardware wizard.

It sounds like it's got the wrong drivers loaded and won't give them up for the correct ones. Uninstalling the device should force it to look for the correct drivers. Now you've got the VIA driver pack you should have an up to date RAID controller driver for it to load from the driver cache.

Goldfish, I tried your suggestion and uninstalled the driver but when I rebooted, Windows automatically detected it and it was going to install the driver but then I got the same error message. The error reads: "The driver installation for this device is missing a necessary entry. This is because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor."
