Max CPU speed on Asus Motherboard

I have an Asus P4S533-E Motherboard and currently a 2.0 Ghz P4. Can I upgrade to a 2.8 Ghz P4? They use the same socket, I think, so physically it should fit, but Asus' website says it supports up to 2.53 Ghz.

Does this mean that any speed Socket 478 will work, but will max out at 2.53 Ghz? Or will it just not work at all? (or is a 2.8 Ghz a different Socket type?)

The other thing I was thinking is that since this is an older motherboard, maybe 2.53 Ghz was the fastest P4 available at the time of writing.

Probably a question for Asus, but I figure I'll get a quicker answer here than waiting for them to email me back.

The excerpt below is from their website...

"The latest P4S533-E motherboard supports Socket 478 IntelĀ® P4 processors, which utilize the most advanced 0.13um process technology to provide frequencies up to 2.53GHz, delivering robust features and performance for your digital world. The IntelĀ® P4 offers optimized performance for audio, video, and Internet applications."

If it is a socket 423 you are out of luck but if it is socket 478 then there is a P4 2.8 with a 533mhz fsb that would work with that MB.

Well, it fits physically. They are both Socket 478.

BIOS recognizes it a 2800 MHz, as does Windows System Information.

Am I doing any harm though to the Motherboard?

    Hi,

It won't harm your mobo but you may or may not have stability problems steming from the bios not supporting that processor.

It probably won't hurt anything but you should see if there is a new bios upgrade for your motherboard incase there is new code for the bios to optimize the cpu usage. If there is make sure to follow the instructions before flashing or even getting a professional to do it!!

You can get CPU-Z from MG to see what your current bios, it usually says the bios version on boot up, but not sure where it will be on that motherboard.
