Hi, and thanks for reading. I have a dell D600, which originally came with 256mb ram. I am in the process of upgrading the ram, and on inspection of the documentation here can see i can use sodimm ram max 1gb per slot. It says i must use min 266Mhz clock speed (pc2100), but no mention of max. When i searched to buy some, most places don't sell this low speed ram any more, and those that do, charge a lot for some reason. My question is, is there a max ram clock speed the laptop will accept, or can i put any cheap chip in above 266Mhz, and it will just run at the bios/mobo's max speed?

    thanks :major

Personally I upgraded laptop for someone recently and thought I could just use the next speed higher and this was advice porvided by a "Memory Advisor" website.

The PC just kept cycling and would not boot.

I took the RAM back and swapped it for the "correct" speed and it booted straight away.

If you can get the RAM locally and the shop doesn't charge a restocking fee you could consider "slightly faster" RAM but be prepared to have to take it back and swap it over.

Here are some listed for that model which are slightly faster and are 1GB modules:

Newegg listings at the right speed:

Theoretically is should work with faster RAM and the BIOS will just underclock it but as Bold Eagle says you may have to swap if you have problems.

Just out of curiosity Bold Eagle, did you check the voltages? I am just wondering whether the faster RAM needed slightly more juice to keep it stable? Might not be the case but just a thought?

Thanks for the reply's. I live in a small town in south wales, so it would end up costing me more in petrol if i had to take back, so I decided to put a bid on a couple of 512 sticks from ebay. Combined, the cost of them was half that of a single one new online. They we're pc2700 so i'm possibly tempting fate, but there's nothing like living on the edge... Hopefully i'll win the auction, and all will be ok, if not, i'll post back in a few days after i've had a little cry :-D
