I recently purchased a Maxtor Basics 500GB external HDD and am just wondering what hard drives they use. I hope it is not the Seagate 7200.11 line since I have just been reading on their horrendous failure rates.

So, what I really would like to know is if Maxtor still produce their own hard drives or do they use Seagates? And if so, do I have a 7200.11?

I think the product number for the external HDD is STM305004N1AAAS-RK or STM305003EHM301-RK whereas for a 500GB 7200.11 it is ST3500320AS or ST3500620AS.

    Please help :)

"Maxtor Corporation was an American manufacturer of computer hard disk drives founded in 1982 and acquired by Seagate in 2006. As of December 2005, just prior to the acquisition, Maxtor was the world's third-largest manufacturer of hard disks. It now operates as a subsidiary of Seagate."

    I would guess Seagate HDD.

edit: I should also mention I did not see any maxtor internal HDD on newegg.com, so I assume Maxtor only makes the case. Besides the point they are the same as Seagate now.

It seems the Maxtor drive has 4 platters making up the 500GB compared to the 7200.11 series having 2 platters. This sounds encouraging. If anyone can confirm that they are different drives please respond :)

This will be my last post on the subject otherwise I'll probably start annoying people. Thank you for your time.
