maxtor h.d.d. drivers?

hi geeks!!
I recently installed a new maxtor hard drive with a sata interface. i read somewhere that i should instal drivers for this drive because windows xp does does not supply them. the article went on to say that the speed of the hard drive should increase substantially!! the drive is also a 7200rpm as opposed to my previous 5800? could anybody please advise where i can get these drivers from. any help would be good!! cheers,

Do you have XP loaded on the Maxtor? If so, then I would think that you have a proper driver for it already. I haven't been able to load XP on a SATA drive without supplying a driver when XP asks for one at the beginning of the install.

If you need a driver, get one from your motherboard manufacturer. If your motherboard supports SATA then there should be a driver available on the manufacturer's web site. My driver came on a cd that was supplied with the mb and I had to follow the instructions that came with it (in a booklet and also on the cd) to put the driver(s) onto a floppy. Seems to work OK.

Look at:
My Computer > Local Disk (C: ) > Hardware

My Maxtor says:
Maxtor 7Y250M0 SCSI Disk Device
Location: Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0
Device Status: This device is working properly.

If you have something like that, I would think that it is OK. I am not an expert on SATA drives though, so don't mistake me for an expert. I just wanted to share my experience with you (still learning myself).

 

sometimes mate u dont need the drivers. windows will use the SATA HDD regardless whether or not the driver is installed.
