May seem a dumb question

I'm pretty new to overclocking and I've been trawling the net to find out what and how the FSB/DRAM ratio works. Could anyone explain it to me? I don't have much of an idea of how it works and what can be achieved by using it. Just incase anyone needs to know im running a 2600+, NF7 standard and generic memory (that doesnt seem too bad).
