MB/HD/Boot problem

I'm working on a PC that's doing some very strange stuff. PCChips motherboard M830LR, 256mb DDR, Athlon1500+, Win2000 SP4. Here's the deal: the PC originally had a Promise ATA card installed and was blue screen erroring shortly after the Win2000 logo came up with Unmountable Boot Device. So I removed the Promise card and attached the HD to IDE0 on the motherboard. The HD is recognized, but I get 'Boot Record on IDE-0 not found'. So I boot to the Win2000 CD, reformat the drive w/o issues and proceed to install Windows. When it gets to the point of rebooting, again Boot Record Not Found. This is w/ 160gb Western Digital drive. I had an OLD Quantum BigFoot drive laying around, so I hooked it up instead of the 160g (it's only 4gb, but whatever works right?) and proceeded to install Win2000 to it. It works fine. Boot Record is found and I was able to install all the drivers and updates, etc... I then hooked up the 160gb again and ran WD's diagnostic on it and it came back as OK. I then did a fixboot and a fixmbr thinking that the boot sector was messed up. Again I got Boot Record Not Found on IDE-0. So I then ghosted the 4gb BigFoot to a BRAND NEW 80gb Hitachi drive. It is also recognized in the BIOS but it also will not boot. Boot Record Not Found on IDE-0. This is driving me CRAZY!!!! What's going on here!
Thinking that the IDE controller was flakey, I put the Promise card back in, hooked up the BigFoot drive to it, and it again Blue Screen Errored w/ Unmountable boot device. So I'm assuming the Promise card is no good. But why do I have no problems with the old Bigfoot drive, and the other drives won't boot? I ran a RAM diagnostic for 5hrs and the RAM is OK. What gives? Any help is appreciated!!!!
