McAfee download issues

Hi All

My first post so please be gentle
A friend of mine who knows nothing about computers has a problem with McAfee AntiVirus and as I know just marginally more than him, he's asked me to help.
He had a virus a while back which he has had removed but ever since, McAfee has refused to download any updates.
Apart from the fact that he has a stack of updates waiting to download, McAfee seems to work fine so I'm guessing that the virus/trojan or whatever somehow disabled the update facility.
Any ideas?

well, there are a few options.
1-how much does he love/like his mcafee (is it paid for)?
2-is the comp relying on automatic updates, or has he tried to manually update it?
3-could the firewall (if he has one) be blocking the updates?
4-is there any anti-spy programs installed (or recent scans run)?

if it were me (him), i'd have him go throught the malware forum, and see what's up. my guess is that somethings either corrupted, firewall blocking updates, or malware is preventing the updates.
