I'm on a new computer which has signs of having McAfee, but I'm not clear yet if it really does. There"s a complete McAfee folder under Program Files called McAfee.com. None of these appears in add/remove programs. Additionally, there's a folder in Program Files called McAfee which contains the program Spam Killer. In add/remove programs there is one McAfee program called McAfee Uninstaller, which I"ve read is a program much like CCleaner, that cleans out the temporary files, etc.

Bundled with AOL 9.0 which is being used, is supposedly a free version of McAfee, however, you have to regsiter for it.

Periodically, I get pop-ups asking for confirmation of spam killer or a pop-up which says that McAfee protection has run out because it's not a subscription.

What I think is that I have a preinstalled version of McAfee which came with the computer, which had a 90 day trial version which ran out and that the online version of McAfee which comes with AOL 9.0 was never signed up for. I have the following questions.

    1) Does anyone know what McAfee.com would refer to as a folder? (online or preinstalled)

    2) Does anyone know how to remove McAfee from the computer so I could simply sign up for the online version which is free?

    3) Can anyone tell me how to tell if any AV is running on the computer?

    Thanks very much!

Is PC-De-Crapifier a user defined tool, or does it simply indescriminately remove whatever the author felt was unnecessary extras? Does it have a user interface where you can point at a piece of software, like McAfee and tell it to uninstall it?

Thanks very much for the tip about the Windows Security. That helped me identify that it is indeed McAfee preinstalled from Dell which is on the computer and not the AOL 9.0 free version. I can use the De-Crapifier to get rid of it, but I don't know what other software it will be taking with it. For instance, I need to keep AOL on this computer.

    Thanks so much Thee :)
