When I purchased my new computer Mc Afee came with it on a 30 day trial basis. I don't want Mcafee and never did. I use Norton (which may or may not be better, but that is not the point). I uninstalled mcafee and got rid of everything but it KEEPS coming back. I have got rid of it 3 times today and it is back now. It is in my program files and I guess it always will be. Today I shut off system restore and deleted everything. At first it wouldn't let me delete it but finally I succeeded. It still came back! My question is what can I do to dump this thing for good? I may even get rid of Norton too and use one of the ones that you guys recomended. But right now I want to dump mcafee.

Check see if mcafee is running cnt alt del processes, mpfservice.exe and mpfagent.exe,if they arnt running its just a case of removing the file,
Turn on system restore create a restore point THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT incase it screws up

restart in safe mode,go to add\remove programs uninstall it,check C:\ to see if its gone if all the files havn't gone delete them,go to run type regedit double click hkeylocal machine\expand software\ find mcaffee.com right click and delete

restart normally it should be gone :)

To access Safe Mode you have the 2 options of....

    1. Tapping F8 at boot to bring up these options:

    choose safe mode
    choose safemode with networking
    choose safemode with prompt
    choose normal windows startup

either of the top two would do... but if you also need some internet or network access go for 2nd option with Networking.

    2. Using msconfig:

    Click Start > Run.
In the Run dialog box, type msconfig and then click OK.
In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.
    Click OK.
When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.

once finished with safe mode, again using msconfig you need to change the following,
In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
Close all programs, and restart the computer

Should be no different, but try using option 2 instead.

I am using AVG. I read about it and listened to comments here and it sounds like it will do the job just fine for me. Thanks a lot for your help and everybody else that chipped in. In order to straighten the whole mess out I had to format my computer (bummer) but Mcafee just would not go out and it didn't show in the add/remove programs.
