ok, I have aol 9.0 security edition with a free mcafee online viruscan download. it worked fine about a month and a half ago, but now it freezes during scans. it started to freeze about two weeks after i downloaded zone alarm firewall. i don't know if zone alarm is the problem, but could it be that my mcafee has been infected? also, my spysweeper has not been detecting any spyware lately, which is odd because it usually detects at least one item, especially wildmedia. Also, aol sometimes launches during startup. i don't know if that's spyware or another virus. i have an Intel pentium III processor with 434 MHz and 256 MB of RAM on a custom made computer. Oh yeah, and my OS is XP pro version 2002. any help would be appreciated.

not sure, but I heard that AOL security comes with virus protection, you may be having a conflict running two versions of antivirus software.
If you are beta testing AOL Security you may want to revert to the basic version of AOL maybe that would fix your conflict?
just remembered the commercials, I think the basic version of AOL comes with virus protection too, maybe you can turn AOL's virus protection off?

    good luck.

thanks for a reply, man. i don't think that's the problem though because when i downloaded aol SE, it detected my norton anti-virus. it made me uninstall it in order to install mcafee because there would have been problems if the two programs ran together. but as of now, mcafee is the only anti-virus program that's running on my computer. when i would be on aol, it would automatically download updates for itself and it would alert me of any viruses/trojans that were trying to get onto my computer. now, however, it does none of that. zone alarm once alerted me that my mcafee was out of date, so i had to manually had to check for updates and update it myself. i don't know what the problem is.

You never mentioned Norton's and MellowMan has a point here. How did you remove Norton's and what version did you have installed? It can cause many problems if not uninstalled properly, give us some details and see if that is the problem.

Check and make sure about Nortons. Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and see if Nortons is in there. If so, uninstall (remove it) and see if that helps with your problem.

If you do not see it listed in Add/Remove use the Norton AntiVirus Rnav2003 Utility here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3077.html

That will hopefully get rid of any left-over NAV files that maybe causing problems.

Disable ZoneAlarm and run the scan, see if it still freezes.
