why do i have mcafee when I have twice been infected by trojans despite mcaffee warning me of it's presence and supposedly cleaning it? this is not a whinge but an honest question. the second attack was so entire that we had to reformat my machine( first one was cleaned using this site) although I think they may have been related.I realise that it can't do every thing but it seems to do not much, I now run other programs but previously thought i was doing the right thing.
sorry if this is the wrong place to post this

You can use some of the freeware programs that we have on our "Top freeware picks":http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20
But I will suggest to use Avast for antivirus and Threatfire for TURBO protection,Comodo for firewall(the best so far),and BoClean for realtime antispyware program.Never had any infection so far.

No antivirus is going to be able to protect you absolutely. There are better ones out there than McAfee. Your best bet is finding one of the best AV's, one of the best Firewalls, and one of the best antiSpywares. Goran.P gave you a good list.

Once you do get malware on your computer, some of it is very hard to get rid of, to the point that your McAfee or other apps are not going to do the job.

You say you used this site to clean your computer once, but I don't see that you ever had a thread in Malware. It is highly recommended that once you do the Read and Run Me Cleaning procedure that you attach the requested logs so that one of the Malware experts can go through them to get anything that was missed (which normally there is). If you don't, malware alot of times leaves parts behind that just reinstall itself again.

yes you are right regarding the lack of post, there wasn't one as I had followed the tips regarding cleaning the computer and also found a thread that went through the same issues, hence after fixing issues and doing a restore, everything seemed fine(so i thought) but the next day everything went wrong with a different set of symptoms, much worse,( but most likely related) which made it very difficult to do any thing on my machine. so your point is taken and had i done that, I would still have all my files:(
any way, i have installed avast and comodo and threat fire and spyware blaster and will use this site should any thing re occur, because it's an excellent site;)

What is the difference between Threatfire and BOClean? Can they both co-exist peacefully since they both give real time protection? I remember vaguely to have read, not to have more than one software of real-time protection?

I have already Comodo Pro FW en BOClean and don't know if I would need Threatfire as well?

    Thank you.

I've got Comodo Pro FW, AVG 7.5 anti-virus, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware 2008, Spybot Search & Destroy.

Yes they can.Threatfire is supplement for Antivirus software,so what avast can not find Threafire will do.Check this out:http://www.threatfire.com/about/

Threatfire and BOClean can co-exist. They are both designed to be additional security software that you install as extras. None of them can replace the firewall, the antivirus program with realtime protection or the antispyware program with realtime protection.

McAfee, however, cannot coexist with anything. What McAfee have you? Freeware or Pro?

I can't find anything on McAfee's homepage. The site is a mess. You click and click and click and you'll find exactly nothing.

I had the full security suite of mcaffee but it is now uninstalled which has been replaced by gorans list and has already found a lurking trojan in a .rar file that has been deleted and a virus, i believe it was from my son clicking a java applett?

Oh dear. McAfee isn't that bad. Far from it. It's not in the very top but still better that most freeware. You just need a little extra such as scanners without realtime protection. SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malwarebytes. We all have that. A few extra scanners. I also have Ad-Aware for cookies. It's still very good at eating cookies. :-D

But the freeware recommendations here on Majorgeeks aren't exactly bad either. :)

The problem is that the amount of malware exploded over the last year. It's growing exponentially at an alarming rate.

    Quoting Wikipedia:
In tests by Virus Bulletin and other independent consumer organizations, McAfee virus scan has not fared well, frequently failing to detect some common viruses. [1]

A review of VirusScan 2006 by CNET criticised the product due to "pronounced performance hits in two of our three real-world performance tests"[2] and some users reviewing the same product reported encountering technical problems.[3]

Some older versions of the VirusScan engine use all available CPU cycles.[4]

Go to Avast tray>Right click>Start Avast antivirus>When Avast apear press Stop memory test>Now GUI is like some sort of recorder, and on your top left, you will find something like Eject button, press this and go to "Schedule Boot time scan",press this following with "Schedule",and OK.
After that your computer will restart and go to boot scan.If something apear(like virus or trojan) press 2,to delete all.

    Good Luck!!!!

You don't need to run boot every day.Once per week is enough.
