Thanks to dlb in an earlier thread I was able to get this board up and running. (Only Vista drivers were available). It had an Award BIOS, v5.10 if I recall. I tried to update the BIOS because I wanted S3 but the update failed; my MB wouldn't even POST. I bought a replacement BIOS with 5.29 and now it POSTs and I can get into BIOS and make changes but XP won't start. Actually it will start but it takes forever. An hour, maybe? It seems like it's not able to access any memory or something like that. That's what it seems like but it may have nothing to do with memory.

I thought that the BIOS is totally unrelated to the OS. Am I wrong? Is there a compatibility problem? What's going on? DLB are you still around? Thanks everyone!

The BIOS is sort of unrelated to the operating system but its not that simple. The BIOS holds a lot of information right down to the time, drives and so much more and Windows does use it. It also holds your memory information, not sure if you have an auto detect on that board or not. I mention this because your worried about memory. If you have multiple stick, remove one and try one in each slot. Then you have to hope its the memory and not the board itself still.

Let me know, maybe DLB will see this and jump back in. He knows his stuff.

Thank you, Major. After doing a lot of research and writing down the possible solutions, I listed them in KISS order. The first of these was to either "restore defaults" in the BIOS or to "optimize." Well, lo and behold, I didn't have to try number 2 since the "restore defaults" worked perfectly. Why there were any settings made on my new BIOS I do not know; maybe there weren't any and this step is just some sort of handshake. Thanks!

Excellent, I didnt suggest that as you had already done it but that should have been obvious. General rule of thumb is to never update your BIOS unless it addresses an issue you are having. Something you will never forget. I'm glad you worked it out!

Agreed! The reason that I wanted to update the BIOS was because I don't have S1. I still don't. I'm going to look for a solution and if I get stumped I'll post again in the appropriate thread. Thanks again!
