Me again..sound card help

Hi All

don't know if this is the right forum BUT.. i recently had a virus which got on my system cos stupid here forgot to update his AV something which i'm always reminding others to do!!


Anyway to cut a long story i lost all sound from my sound blaster live! card and after trying loads of different ways to get it back (latest drivers, re-install, swapping pci sockets ect ect) it still wouldn't work so i figured maybe my slight temper fit (i lost it and booted the card down the stairs when nothing worked) had killed the card for good so off i go to buy a new card...brought me a cheapo one for now its a Genius soundmaker 4.1 V2.
I've uploaded the drivers and everything including getting the latest driver update from the genius website and still i have nothing.

When i try to use media player, it tells me that there is either no sound card, its not working properly or its in use by some other program.?.

I've checked the system>device manager>profiles ect and it says that the card is not working properly or it doesn't have all the drivers installed, it also says (code 10) whatever that means?

Can someone please help?

You've probably still got a nasty, or more than 1, on your PC.

Thanks for the help, i've DL'd avast (what a difference to my last AV) and i've DL'd A2 (hijack free and the other one).

Can you reccomend which tweak/repair/enhance progs to DL please because i'm paranoid of getting something wrong and making a bigger mess of this damned machine.

Glad you liked Avast. Works simply and well. No need to worry about it getting updates, as you no doubt have found.

As to other stuff to recommend, there was a thread a few months ago, on MG, covering the 5 most essential programs, other than the bleeding obvious. I will have to go back through old records to try and find it. Someone else please step in, if you kept the thread number.

In the meantime, read through every new thread posted on MG. Sooner or later you will get the feel for what people are using, what works well, or doesn't work well.

You will soon pick out the true experts by the nature of their replies. Try what they recommend. What OS are you using. XP Home. XP Pro, 2000, ME, W98SE? That would help recommendations. Bazza

I'm running ME on a compaq P4 .

 

As you have already downloaded two of my favorites ( A2 Squared and Avast ), I would also recommend Spybot Search and Destroy, SpyWare Blaster, and CCleaner. All do a great job and are freeware available for download on MajorGeeks. A2 is great, but Spybot picks up tracking cookies that it doesn't. CCleaner does a great job of cleaning all your temp files, cookies, etc. when it is ran and also includes a registry cleaner. SpyWare Blaster prevents known spyware from being installed on your computer. Hope this helps!

I've already got spyware blaster running and i check for updates every day, the same with adaware SE, i did have SB S&D but deleted it without thinking.

I also DL'd ccleaner but i can't seem to find it so i'll go DL SB & CCleaner now.
