Mechwarrior 4 Sound Issue

Hi everyone

I have been experiencing a problem with trying to play MW4 Mercenaries with sound. The problem occurs when the main menu is loaded and I try to access any options, either on the first or second attempt I go to access any of the available options it will crash to desktop. The error messege I received is as follows

EXCEPTION: attempt to read from address 0x0000002C in D3DIM700! (+0x3181)

I thought the data on the CD was damaged so I borrowed another MW4 and reinstalled it. But it still came up with the same result

I have found the cause of the problem at first to be my sound card after disabling it in Device Manager I was able to play MW4 unhindered. I updated the driver for the sound card but it was not secessful. I even tried an older driver and was still unsuccessful. So I removed the sound card and tried the onboard audio instead. But the game still crashed to desktop.

I heard that the problem might be a missing or damaged multimedia codecs. So I tried to follow the instruction on this page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314505
but only got con.fused as the process explained is a different version to my installation of windows.

I have also done a repair installation of Windows but I have still had no luck.

Any help or suggestions would very much be greatly appreciated!!

I will attach a Dxdiag and an error log of the crash report.

 

To cut a long story short, I want to try and reinstall DirectX. many results on the error report D3DIM700! points that my DirectX may be damaged. But I want to completly remove DirectX before I reinstall it again. Can anyone recomend me a good program to do this?

Also this might seem like a silly question, but can I do this if SP2 is installed?
