Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Media Center won't be built into Windows 8, saying those who want the entertainment software will have to pay for it.

Windows 8 also won't be able to play DVDs by default, requiring users to find additional software. The company said apps in Windows 8 will allow easy media playback for internet video, claiming that's how "the vast majority" of people watch TV shows and movies via their computers, rather than using DVDs. Plus, Microsoft added, including the right codecs to play broadcast TV or DVDs is expensive. "These traditional media playback scenarios, optical media and broadcast TV, require a specialized set of decoders (and hardware) that cost a significant amount in royalties," Microsoft said.
