    Hi there,

My roommate recently has become a victem of some kind of virus on his comp. He already had a serious amount of spyware on his comp for a while... wich was probably not too hard to remove but i didnt have much time free to help him out past weeks ... But since like yesterday his comp is infected with something a bit more serious, well thats what i expect from the looks of what it does. Only had a quick glimpse at it today, but it looked pretty freaky to me.
Well the deal is like this: When you open media player it opens a dos box wich starts doing all kinds of commands while making your pc's internal speaker beep like hell. Didnt had a chance to see what commands it was actually doing as i pulled the plug as quickly as possible. Either way it can't be healthy to let it do what it wants to do ;)
Well ive looked on the web to try to find out what i could be but havent come across an answer so far. So i was wondering if maybe someone has some experience with the same kind of thing and knows what kind of virus this could be, what it damages and if it can be removed without any problems..?
Was planning on doing a format with a fresh install afterwards but it seems he has a lot of important stuff on his comp randomly spread over his drive so its probably a real pain to back that stuff up lol. Well its stupid enough he hasnt done that already anyways...oh well, i cant say i always make backups myself hehe.
Well if someone could help me out would be much appreciated :)
    cheers

I know you've checked out spyware but has he checked for virii/trojans with an updated antivirus checker?

There was around Feb this year a few updates to media player for a potential vunerability that could allow someone to take over a PC... so with this has he updated his version of windows?

what he could do to try and resolve this before a re-install is to Virus Scan with a few options and best practice is to disable system restore ( but only after he has backed up all his important stuff ) > reboot then do the following, but remember not to start Media Player

    1. Run whatever virus scan he has installed but only after checking for virus definition updates

    2. Run an online scan like trends housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

    3. Install, update and run this trojan scanner, its a nice backup to what your AV may miss A2 ( A-Squared ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4281
