Mega-huge Windows update file!

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 right now and I won't be switching to 3 unless forced. I do Windows updates manually.

This morning I checked the update site and was horrified by the whopping HUGE 248Mb download file. I mean, the SP3 download is only 66 Mb. This newest SP2 update is KB95187 x86, the .Net framkework 3.5 SP1 and Net Framework 3.5 family update. (Yeah, they can offer a disc for the 66 Mb, but not for the 248Mb...???)

So...is it essential, is it worth it? Anyone here have it yet? Is that the size of an operating system? (I dunno, just curious. ;))

I have satellite internet which will get throttled back to dialup if I use too much bandwidth, so this will be an all nighter download session, if I do go that route. I would like to know if it's worth it. Thanks!

Yup, I just went back to the update site for the third time to verify this before I posted because I just can't believe this. (How about a 'bang head here' smilie? ;))

Oops, that update was KB951847 x86. I see I left out a number.

Oddly enough, this update was not offered to my desktop, running Windows MCE SP2. I always thought MCE was just a dressed up version of XP Pro, but obviously there's some difference there.

You won't need 3.5 unless a specific program was written using it and at this stage of XP's life, I doubt there will be. Leave it there unless you install something that needs it and you will then have to make a choice.

    Hi

Sadly the Service Packs are generally in the 100s of MBs, and I know what a PITA it is for DUN or SAT users, so if a friend has broadband or has the Service Pack 3 cd already (some come off PC magazines) then go that route if possible as SP3 does not offer any speedups to XP but does offer some more compatability and a few new security and driver supports (Wifi and Bluetooth is updated)

An OS as in say XP will be around 500-1gb+ in size but as the SPs update the core components in many cases the size of SPs is generally large.

As for worth it, well yes but as you are limited for internet and downloadbility you will be fine with SP2 and all the normal monthly hotfix updates for now as XP is near EOL (End of Life), and likely no SP4 will come and if it was in the pipline I would have no doubt known about an early test version by now.

Thanks for your responses. I've been checking around, it looks like this update doesn't do any harm anyway. As to whether or not I need it...yes, I can see I won't know until I actually DO need it, eh?

I might, as I said on another thread, just suffer through it and get the thing. We users of this ISP can generally get away with a big download in the middle of the night without the speed getting cut back, so if my speed stayed at its peak, it should be done in an hour, hopefully. Still thinking about that one.

As for XP Pro SP3...I have SP2 right now and I'm reluctant to change, but that's another issue.

This .NET thing was just such a shock and the thought of having to download and install such a behemoth makes me cringe, but I would like to keep the computer up to date as much as I can, keep SP2 going as long as it can.

Still thinking on it. I appreciate the input, nice to know this .NET update isn't really one we can't live without.:)

Hello, I was just wondering the same...... I have Windows XP Pro SP3 and a bunch of .NET1, 1.1, 2.0 etc..... Lots of other .NET stuff too. Since I am on dial-up ( NO LAUGHING, PLEASE!) I am going to TRY to get to a hi-speed computer in town and download it to a CD then bring it home and install it.. rolleyes

Odd thing is, it is in WU as a High-Priority Update, and I have AU turned on... WHY oh WHY didn't AU pick it up is beyond me.....:confused

Wish me LUCK, I think I will need it.... :-o

You'll be OK TeeCee, grabbing them from a high speed is best. As to dial-up, I will never laugh at anyone who has no other choice, been there and done that.

Thank you "augiedoggie", I was just about to log out and head for town! :-D I'd like to thank you for the compliment... yeah, when dial-up is the only choice, it is better than nothing!
You have a GREAT day, and thanks again! :wave

Seems odd that you're asking about .Net framkework 3.5 SP1, since you were a participant in this discussion: Why do I need .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1?

Well, I used USB flash-drives, because they hold 256MB. and got home, plugged it in, but still cannot install :cry Just got an error, and sent that off to Microsoft..... Seems that Set-Up had encountered a problem (NO KIDDING!) and did not complete correctly....

It is a HUGE file, one part alone is 51MB, and that update KB951847 is actually two updates combined into one... That is why it is so huge... Well, I'll keep ya posted, and see if I can get it loaded yet..... rolleyes
Stay tuned for more updates ........:confused

    Hi TeeCee

If you ran the installer from the USB pen, then try copying the KB file to your desktop and running from their, if you get an error do post it in full if possible as it may hold the clue as to why and any workaround if available.

Also when installing turn off your antivirus software and Spybot S&D (if installed), as sometimes that "can" cause a failure on install.

Hi Halo, Thanks for the help ;) I have 2 USB Flash Drives, not pencil:-D
When I plugged in the first one, it started to install, then said it needed to connect to the Internet... Really confused me... I downloaded this from a hi-speed computer, but maybe I had set the speed wrong when I was on that computer... It had asked, "56K dial-up, and several other hi-speeds", but I didn't know what speed that computer was on, and neither did the people there... So, I clicked the lowest of the hi-speed, (not the 56K dial-up, tho!) When I plug in the flash drive, it dings that it is recognized, but I am not getting the box up that asks me what I want to do with it... I just click RUN, then the drive, and it comes up. I may be doing something wrong here, eh? I shall continue my quest!!! Thank you for your input, and I will keep ya posted.. I have both files on flash drive, so will do as you suggested.. I don't have Spybot, just my windows firewall and Trend-Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security... I'll be back shortly!!! I HOPE! rolleyes

Halo, Now Microsoft wants me to remove all the .Net framework from the computer, and then go to the website and download the 3.5 manually... Now, those two errors I posted, are from the links that they sent to me to download the update, when in fact, they were only PARTS of the update... One was only 2.82MB, and the other was 1.35 MB, and the update is over 248 MB. When I tried to install, the first one tried to download another 51 MB from my dial-up connection !!! UGH! :cry Now, here is what is showing in the windowsupdate.log:

DnldMgr *********** DnldMgr: New download job [UpdateId = {3336D3C1-57CC-44F2-B0B0-08AA487A7E33}.100] ***********

Dnldmgr***Update is not allowed to download due to regulation.

DnldMgr Regulation: {7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D} - Update D5100858-9CD1-40EE-8041-FC9778767E3E is "PerUpdate" regulated and can NOT download. Sequence 1503 vs AcceptRate 0.

My computer has always been set to AU.... It has always picked up the important -critical updates, and I cannot figure out why it isn't picking this one up.... Any thoughts on this? Thanks....... :confused

OK, I have it loaded! :-D Thanks to my ISP, my major Guru there burned it to a
700MB CD, and I installed it today... VERY EASY to do with CD. ;)

I was getting the errors I posted, because the links that Microsoft sent me to download to my flash drive, were 2 LITTLE updates, one was 2.82 MB, and the other was 1.35 MB.... No, it wasn't' the HUGE update I needed. :confused

Thank Goodness for our ISP guys, eh? :wave

Yes, it is MEGA-HUGE, but remember, the impossible does take a little longer. ;)

Yes, one 700MB CD does hold the entire update... Good Luck to the rest of you, and I haven't noticed anything different as before, either.... :cool

All is well again on the homefront now.... Thanks for the opportunity to inform you of my experience.... :wave
