Why did you sign up to MajorGeeks?
I signed up in the hope of finding a discontinued software program.
It has had almost 2,000 views and no replies... :(

My AV told me I had a virus. This was back when HiJack this was the only thing a lot of places used to remove infections and MGs was listed as one of the forums that read the logs. I came here, found I had to go through that Read & Run Me, did the whole thing, only to discover my AV gave me a false positive.

I had been a member at another forum that turned into one of the most disgusting places you could imagine. I had just left there and found the lounge here. It was a lot more active than it is now so I started posting, found how nice and respectful everyone was here (like a breath of fresh air in the message board universe) and stayed. My 11th anniversary is coming up this March 6 (I just checked. lol).

Except for one forum (the first one that I signed in many years ago) I always became a forum member because I found interesting topics were I was able to help. Right now I looked up my own topics in my MG profile. Nothing was found which means that I only answered in threads of other questioners.

I want to help. I helped my friends and relatives with computer problems because I hate to see people taken advantage of and/or given false information. I also don't think it is helpful to wipe a computer, give it back and say, "well it is all fixed". It takes zero skill to do that!

I look in at quite a few forums. I sign up for the ones that are not toxic. Life is hard, I don't want to waste time reading juvenile posts or those where the participants flame each other.

I lurked in the shadows for a few years and then finally joined in 2012. I liked that it was a decent place with decent people (the duds and trolls get weeded out) and it is a nice place to hang out. Tim keeps a tight rein on the software so if someone wants me to suggest some software, I have no hesitation suggesting they come here as all the software is tested and safe without having to contend with 500,000 titles of junkware.
MGs is a great resource with lots of great tips and videos and if you need help with a viral infestation then the team of site AV gurus work their magic with a minimum of fuss and often plenty of good humour:cool:
Most of all I like the people and reading about the things happening in other member's lives and the different points of view from all around the world. I might not always agree but generally everyone is pretty civilised and polite........ and then some members have a wicked sense of humour which gives me a giggle :D:cool:

I joined in May 2006 but I had been reading the forums long before that. I had several problems with Windows 98 and knew nothing so I started reading and learning.

I have used Major Geeks site for software downloads and the forums for help through Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1, and now Win10.

I don't respond often to help in the support forums because I know there are more experenced and informed members here that will offer better advice then I can, although sometimes there are different ways to get the same results.

I recommend Major Geeks to people all the time, it is the best. Thanks to the Major Geeks and all the Geeks that help here. Hope MG will always be here.

Some of you forgot to vote!:p I forgot to put in my post that years ago I tried to get help on other sites and the answer I got was a standard copy and paste reply that didn't help much. No follow up. Maybe others have had better luck other places, I can only speak of my experience. Here at MG people try to help as quick as possible and stay with you until you resolve your problem if you follow the advice given, which sadly not everyone follows advice.

well, back in the day, it was so i could play the little casino games MG had here :p the best luck i had was with roulette.
actually, [ besides the first class help offered in the forums ] i consider MG an important internet resource because all software featured here can be downloaded directly from MG, without wrappers or any modifications to the original program that you are downloading. this is absolutely huge!! and i will always be grateful for this. one can't help but get a warm fuzzy feeling from MG, so i signed up, started looking through the posts to see if i could be helpful somehow. majorgeeks is just a nice place to come and visit and spend some time.

He told me this was a neat place, and thought maybe the two of us could find a home here. Didn't pan out like we thought, but I stuck. Turns out I don't know jack about tech, as I was there more to police the forums than provide any kind of help, so I primarily stay in the Lounge.

So to answer the poll... none of the above. Just needed a new forums home, and I found several good friends here, some of whom I've spent time with IRL.

It was probably in 2003/2004? that I signed up and wrote my 1st post because I needed help with Java. It was my first PC. A wiseguy who responded was not very friendly and helpful and MA stepped in. I left MG then for a while but came back.

I signed up as I was member of Tweakfiles before Majorgeeks was born and was logical choice, reason I signed up to Tweakfiles was I just wanted to learn more about computing and just tweaking PCs in general as that was the thing to do in the 90s

I looked for software from the site almost from the beginning, but spent most of my time following the Fred Langa newsletter in the early 2000s to optimize my W98 SE. About 2004, I started gaming for 8 years, yet still came here for software. Quit gaming in late 2011 and joined to help if I could.

I first came to the software forums in '04 or so looking for tips or to have questions answered. Experiences here also helped with my computing in the work environment. MG provided a learning platform for Windows configuration, software and hardware knowledge, and how to control viruses and malware. I update nearly all my software here, and it's been the browser home page for years.

I signed up because my computer repair man said I could get free programs. Then I started reading the lounge back in 2001 and it was like a soap opera. I really got a kick out of a teenager who would be posting here from his classroom. Winchie should have had a reality program with all her adventures.

I lurked for a long time before I actually signed up. I came for the software (I am a free software junkie, and love to try out new applications).

I didn't start lurking the forums for a good while, till I saw a question in the hardware thread that I actually knew the answer to. Signed up and never looked back.

In the late 90s/early 00s a UK forum run by my ISP was really buzzing. It was a time when everything - hardware, software, networking - were all changing rapidly and and it was great fun, and highly educational to be a part of it all. I got hooked, but some time later, after a takeover, it got closed and I missed it no end. After checking out a few other online forums MG seemed to be the sort of place I'd like to belong to and the rest is history. These days of course most ppl can solve their own problems, courtesy of Google, so our forums here aren't the hives of activity they once were but I still follow along, mostly out of habit I guess. :)
