I have a Compaq Presario SR1610NX that calls for 1 GB DIMM 184-pin - 1 x 1GB 1GB PC3200 400MHz DDR 184-Pin DIMM Standard Non ECC memory. I have in my parts box some Dell memory that shows to be
1GB ECC Module - 1 x 1GB 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2-533 240-Pin DIMM ECC Non Registered. Would it be possible to replace the Compaq memory with the Dell memory?

    No.

Your machine uses DDR (184 pin) memory.

What is in your parts box is DDR2 (240 pin) memory. It will not fit in the memory slot on your Compaq.

    Hope this helps. :)

So I guess using tin snips to cut the unwanted 56 pins off the dell memory would be out of the question? :) thanks for the info, sure was hoping it might work!

I can't believe I didn't notice that the chips weren't even the same physically -- I'm really not that stupid, just have a lot of things on my mind right now - thanks very much for the help!

No problem. If I had a dollar for every issue I initially overlooked, I think I'd be a millionaire. :-D
