I'm running a sony vaio desktop model pcv-rs411. The memory sticks are labeled as pc2100. I'm interested in upgrading from my current 512 to a gig. Do I have to use pc2100 memory sticks or is their another type that's compatible with this type's slot?

You don't have to, but to use slower isn't recommended. Most motherboards will default to the slowest memory module speed anyway.

Going faster won't help (or hurt), as that's the correct RAM for your system.

Your model has two memory slots, and supports a total of 1GB of RAM.
