Recently someone recommended to me that I get a memory key. Supposedly this eliminate the need for floppy disks and cd roms. Is this true? If I buy a memory key I will no longer need to carry around floppy disks? I looked online and it seems to me that memory keys save your hard drive. I am a student so it will be used for microsoft applications (mainly word). Can a memory key be used in the same manner as floppy disks and cd-rom's?

Yes you can use USB memory keys as floppies and CDs, just depends on the size of Memory key you get to how much
info you can store on them,

I have a 128mb and a 1GB USB memory key, the 1GB one will store a full CD of info, however they are not at a size yet that will hold a full hard drive worth of info... they are just great for portability in files as in Word/Excel Docs, small programs, pictures, music etc

Yes they are simple to use just drag n drop, cut and paste or save as your files to the Key drive.... I use them all the time.

Agree 100% with Halo. Floppies and CD's are being replaced by USB memory keys (or one of the various other names they are called, like USB flash drives, etc.) and DVD read/writers.

RE: USB flash drives, you can even format and defrag them, using standard Windows commands, if required. Bazza

I most definately am VERY fond of my pen drive (USB "memory key")!!

Not only are they a lot more compact than the equivilant amount of floppies, but they are also faster for read/write speeds!!

Just clicked on Properties on my installation of Office 2000 on my C: drive, and the space taken up for a full MS Office install is around 200 megs, so it would all fit on a 256 meg USB pen drive, better still would be a 512 meg drive.

You, of course, would need to have the drive plugged in when you went to install Office/Word, and specify the drive label for the USB drive.

Not sure how M$ would view this if you toted it around to various PC's, though. Bazza

Possible, but not in the likes of MS Word etc as none of the installed registry components will be on the USB drive... so dont 100% know that answer but I would imagine without testing that theory, their would be too many registry calls to make it work,

I basically ment portability for moving small application/software installers between PCs, saves having to download them again... however their are some apps which you can run off USB keys, their is a whole "Portable" series, which covers Firefox 1.5 to Thunderbird

The full list includes a Word Processor and AntiVirus that can all be run from USB drives http://portableapps.com/
