memory question

    right now im using 1 gig of kingston pc3200 cl3 184-pinn dimm. a friend told me there is gain to be had meaning its not always the amount of memory you have but certain speed and values. any truth to this? SiSoftware Sandra

    sorry didnt mean to put the whole mb info up there lol and also it said this at the bottom. Warning 100 : Large memory sizes should be made of Registered/Buffered memory. anyone can help me understand all this memory jargon?

    Yes, you have your transfer timings and size, the lower the timings and the higher the rated speed the better. There are value ram (cheap generic stuff) performance ram (your 'avg' ram) and then high performance ram (your high grade ram). Look around and websites like newegg.com they have detailed info at memory and you will see that the higher performance it is the more it will cost you out of pocket.

    thanks for the reply. i see all the diffrent mem sticks and how the prices vary but im not sure about what timings would be best. mostly for gaming and online browsing. if it were you what would be say your 1st 2 picks? 1 gig of course. price doesnt matter at this point id just like to compare timings and such with what i have currently.

    For good timings, 2-2-2-5 is probably the best right now. 2-3-3-6 is not too bad either.

    Also, since your memory is rated at PC3200, but you are only able to run it at PC2700, you may be able to safely push your timings a little lower. Possibly to 2-2-2-5. Definitely to 2-3-3-6.
