Memory Upgrade Advice (Crucial doesn't work)

Hi folks. I'm on my grandmother's PC, which is sorely in need of a RAM upgrade.

My usual source for info about a machine in this regard, is the scanning tool on crucial.com, which gives a handy readout of installed memory (broken down by chips in slots), number of free slots, and total capacity of each slot.

Unfortunately, for some odd reason, this tool isn't working with this pc. The output it gives is:
That first value is clearly not quite right.

Using SIW, I've gotten some slightly more meaningful results, see the bottom of this post. In short, we currently have 2x256MB sticks of PC2100 DDR133 RAM, and the machine supports up to 1 GB in each of it's two slots.

What I'm not clear about, is what kind of memory I ought to get to replace this. It's going to be two 1 GB sticks of DDR1 ram, but I'm not sure what the highest speed is that the machine can support. Can anyone tell me, from the information below ?

    Code:

    Hi

If you use Everest or a similar program to find out the motherboard model, it would be easy enough to find the maximum supported memory speeds for that motherboard. Or, you can look on the board itself for the make/model number.

What is the make and model of the computer? Did you also try the Crucial Memory Advisor™?

    Memory Size:1GB
    Type:DDR/SODIMM
    Rating:DDR333/PC2700 Backward compatible with PC2100
    No. of Pins:200
    Frequency:333 Mhz
    Cas Latency:2.5
    Voltage:2.5v
    Buffer Status:Unbuffered

    Memory Type DDR (PC2100)
There are two slots and each slot is currently holding 256MB. Each slot can hold up to a 1GB stick for a max of 2GB in the Samsung.
The only thing I can't tell if RAM has to be installed in matching pairs.

I'm not sure you will have an easy time finding notebook DDR memory.

    @WarKirby:

Your grandmother's computer uses standard desktop DDR-266. Typically, that means you can use PC2700 just as well, since it clocks backwards and will slow down to match your computer. Since you were using the Crucial scanner, here's a link to their PC2700 memory: 2x1GB PC2700

Should work just fine in your grandmother's machine. :)

If you decide to get some memory of ebay be careful as there is a lot of cheap high density memory kicking about, it seems like a bargain until you install it. This stuff is not intended for workstations and there can be compatibility issues with it.

Thanks Mimsy. I learn at least one new thing daily and I learned that a notebook can use desktop memory!

It can if the desktop is an iMac. So there! :p

Thanks for catching that, that was embarrassing. LOL

I'm confused by these replies o.o
I never mentioned it being a notebook, it isn't. It's a desktop pc. See the attached dxdiag for all info

What is it intended for then

Ok, I'm looking at this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-X-1GB-Deskt...erComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item27b6858737

    Will it work ?

I can see why it's confusing you, and I think it's entirely my fault. I was sleep-deprived when I made my first posts in this thread, and so when plodr pointed out a discrepancy, I immediately assumed I had made a mistake from being too exhausted when posting. Sorry about that. :-o

If you're on a desktop, then my first post still applies and the memory I gave you a link to is the correct one for your motherboard.

No. It's registered ECC , which is a form of server memory, and it's completely wrong for your computer. If you're on a budget and looking for the best possible deal, I would honestly stay away from ebay. Buy something very cheap from an authorized reseller of a major brand instead, and that way you can be sure you get a warranty on the memory. Amazon UK sells computer memory, you can buy the Crucial part from them plugging in the part number (CT12864Z335) in the Amazon search. Or you can buy the part from Crucial UK. ;)

Don't worry about the speed, DDR-333 is fully backwards compatible, it will work in the computer just fine.

I threw a minor hissy-fit in a thread a while back about the gross misinformation that seemingly well-meaning people post in forums when it comes to memory density. None of what you posted is correct, and you may want to consider switching to other sources of information, if this is the sort of "facts" they provide.

Hi, I am sorry aswell as I was the one that gave the link to ebay thinking it was notebook ram you where looking for, but the same applies with the type you are looking for i.e DDR 333 PC2700 desktop ram, as Mimsy has already pointed out it is backward compatible so will run at the best possible speed that your machine can run, it must be NON ECC.
    Regards iain.t :major

Side note... ECC was a complete hardware design fail, anyway. Non-ECC is better.:-D

Oh yes, completely. That's why all servers everywhere still use it. :p

Tsk tsk, this thread is about personal computers. Take that server talk back to your local Google cryogenically cooled facility. :major

I apologize for assuming the computer in question was a laptop. That added to the confusion.
