Hi just installed extra memory in my friends IBM thinkpad R40 2683. When I boot, laptop starts beeping. Think this means that the computer does not recognise the extra new memory. Any ideas how to fix greatlt appreciated.

Yeh sounds like it samuel different brands of memory can be funny like that, easy way to check is to pull the working memory out and put just the new memory in,if it works the new and old memory may be incompatible,if it doesnt the memory is either dead or incompatible with the laptop

You may be able to get the memory to work by adjusting bios settings but there are very few you can adjust in laptops
