recently i noticed something wierd with the amount of spcae on my hard drive.
i had about 179gb free of 298gb for about 1month (i hadnt been saving any pictures or videos etc). But when i looked on 'my computer' it said that i now have 213gb free of 298gb!

Thats 30gb of stuff been deleted... and i didnt do it!

Any ideas how i can find out what has been deleted, or why i have more free space?

For 30GB to vanish is astonishing without pics and video. How about audio CD's saved on the drive. If you are not missing anything, then you should be glad - if anything. Did you by any chance play with Sys restore and loose restore points. Even then 30GB :confused

i havent found anything of mine to be missing, so in a way im glad. But still its worrying for 30gb's to vanish...

    Hi

    What is OS?

Have you turned off say Hibernation or flushed the System Restore Points at all? those could account for 30GBs of space.

Sorry to bring back an old thread but the problem is still there. at first i was happy because i had 30gb of extra space with nothing of mine missing. Now though, im losing space again. Although its not gone below the amount of space i had before, im still a bit concerned because its going down in gb chunks! i looked earlier and it was at 183gb i havent downloaded anything big, and now its at 180gb.

BTW No i havent fiddled with the system restore.

Any more suggestions as to what the problem is?

    Hi

Dont mean fiddle with System Restore or Hibernanate, but if you dont use hibernate then turn off Hibernate and System Restore points will use 15% of the total size of your hard drive by default, so when you flush the Restore Points it will over time grow again so you will need to flush again ( I noticed my main HD used to drop 2/4GB over a few days, dependent on what I was installing as many applications and any Windows Updates will create a restore point before installing as safety measure ), so your 3GB drop could be explained in a new system restore point, especially if you just done this months updates?

    To turn off hibernate http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=920730

You could resize the space System Restore uses as its now not as easy to do as XP and its slider, now done from an elevated command prompt.

In order for you to manage space run (from an elevated cmd prompt):

Syntax: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[here add the drive letter]: /For=[here add the drive letter]: /Maxsize=[here add the maximum size]

    e.g.
    vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=6GB (6GB is an example )

*elevated command prompt is opened by clicking Start and typing CMD in the Start Search box and then right click and run as admininstrator.

Halo, i just looked at the system restore list and theres a new system restore date that has been put there about the time i realised the drop in memory. Are these different dates what you mean by 'points'?

Hi, yes one and the same.

Flush System Restore to the point at which it only keeps the last one, to do this goto your C drive > Right Click > Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files from all Users > More Options tab and under System Restore and Shadow Copies click Cleanup > Delete > OK and you should see your space increase.

To limit the amount of HD space SR uses, the earlier command would need to be used and a value in size ( example of mine was 6GB ) you want to use up.

is there anyway to check my current max limit for sys restore?

    Yes

From an elevated command (CMD) prompt run this command vssadmin list shadowstorage and it will show max space allocated ( listed as Maximum Shadow Copy Storage Space )

I posted the route to this in message #6 at bottom

*elevated command prompt is opened by clicking Start and typing CMD in the Start Search box and then right click and run as admininstrator.

Edited addition ~ it will be the top search in the list.

No probs, so I would imagine with your size main HD your allocated Max space could be around 30GB+ ( edit: typed this bit while you posted so didnt see actual size of 44GB+ )

I'd be tempted to either have a flushing regime say once a month or change the allocation to say 10GB, should cover a few restore points with that sort of size, I have mine at 10GB, once the system hits 10GB of space used by SR, it will then start to delete the oldest restore point to allow the new one to be created.

If you dont use Hibernation as I mentioned do turn if off as that could account for a fair amount of space, to check that ( also if unticked its on ) is to goto your C drive > Right Click > Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files from all Users > and this time look down the Files to Delete section for Hibernation File Cleaner and see what space its taking, if you tick it, it will be cleaned and disabled also ( another method of disabling opposed to the earlier posted one )

When assigning a new max storage size do i have to write gb?
Because i just wrote the command and i only put '10' as the max size and i was told that the 'specified number is invalid'.

    Hi

Yup and here is syntax for you to set to 10GB, just copy and paste the below line into the CMD prompt

    vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=10GB
