Ok. I can phased this ok in person but trying to describe something relatively simple is a bit hard.

I have 4 physical hdds and there are numerous partitions for various reasons on my pc. I have a bad habit of copying/dumping data and not really keeping on top of it. I'd say that maybe a 1/3 of my data is in duplicate (some is just plain outdated).

My question is:- in Vista, when you either copy or move data from 1 directory/folder to another and there there is already a version of that data there, it gives you options to keep both and appends the file name.

Is there something out there that I would be able to use on XP Pro to do a similar thing? I've tried variants of software like dup finders etc but it takes time to search and the results are less than perfect.

    Cheers.

    Hi

Also you could try one I use in Vista in SyncToy 2.0 (while it does mention XP, it works in Vista and even Windows 7 RC), this application allows you to sync two folders (can have multiple pairs) together and one of the options are

    • Synchronize: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes in one folder is repeated on the other.
    • Echo: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right.
    • Subscribe: Updated files on the right are copied to the left is the file name already exists on the left.
    • Contribute: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. Similar to Echo, except there are no deletions.
    • Combine: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renamed and deleted files are ignored.

BUT searching for duplicate files can be done with applications but you'd need to weed out the ones you wish to keep, where as the options Foogoo and I have posted may allow you to have a small network of folders that are kept in sync with each other.
