Goal- to have the work email come into my Gmail account, allowing me to use ONE account vs two.
Is this safe? The work is contract/consulting work so may only be 3-6 mos, and want to be sure by merging the two emails, I'm not compromising my security. Thoughts on this? Thanks

    What about the company's security?
Considering you don't own the company, keep the emails seperate. Afterall, it's only for 3-6 months.

We both agreed that an email with their domain is better. It's a small company. Want to be sure that if I merge, making the work address show up in my gmail, that my personal gmail is safe. Additional thoughts Eldon? Thanks

Fair enough. Your personal Gmail will be safe.
Take care when opening all emails from the company - you have no control over who has access to using the company's email address.

Sounds like you are using a web browser for your email, and that definitely does make it a pain when you have more than one account to deal with. Alternatively you could use an email client which would allow you to have separate sets of folders for the two accounts without having to log in and out of anything. If that appeals then ask for more info.
