Friend had blown PSU so installed new and another case as PSU was too large to go in. Manged to sort wiring to get started and this is how it goes.. I get One Beep and screen with choices of boot Safe Mode/last known etc. Whatever i choose I reach the XP load screen and then the BSOD for a split sec and around we go again. Have checked and reseated RAM . Cleaned Heat Sink and cool Fins, checked all relevant wiring as only have HD connected. Onboard Graphics so no card.. Tried to boot from CD OS , no good (around again) which leaves the mobo or CPU .. Could this wrong power switch that she did , like, had it on 100 Volt instead of 230 volt have caused other probs than blowing PSU ??????

I don't know if it is still the case, but...used to...you couldn't put standard universal psu in a michine like Compaque, Dell, Gateway, etc.!!! you had to get the psu from them, because the A$$holes would change the wiring so that it would work only with there psu (even though it looks just like the standard psu)...it is a good way for them to screw you, because, as we all know... they are going to charge you significantly more that a standard store bought psu!!

So you might want to investiget that!!

Yup it can,Although the voltage is halved it draws 26 amps through the 13amp fuse,That should have popped, replace the fuse and the old psu should be ok.Did she have it working ,then switch it herself? Most psu's are full rangefrom 110-220v they just auto switch and any psu sold in the uk has to be set at 220.Other than that it could have damaged anything,I'm gonna go data corruption/windows,blown mobo, blown vid card, blown memory in that order. :(

Ok Rikky thanks for that, not sure how she accomplished it (changing voltage I'll check with her.. whilst running or off) so its basically pot luck , firstly I could try with changing RAM if I can get a stick of PC100 , or something i could do if windows is at fault is to try another HD but me thinks that as it already will not read first CD boot prob lies elsewhere. Of course I've tried resetting CMOS to no avail. I'll keep ya posted .. :)

    Re: Merry-Go-Round Boot/Problem Solved

Problem Solved... I took the HD out and installed in another computer and ran a chkdsk through and it found some bad sectors and fixed, changed DVD Rom as that was not working correctly, hence not responding to first boot order, reinstalled HD back to Old Mobo , and problem has now been solved. :)
