Hi, I've recently started suffering with this problem, each and every time I try to surf the web. It is now impossible to use my computer. I've tried searching the internet for solutions but all information seems to date back a couple of years.

The message report I get is:

    AppName iexplore.exe
    ModName mshtml.dll
    AppVer 7.0.6000.16705

This seems to have all started when Windows downloaded new updates. I've trawled through the Windows site looking for updates or hotfixes, but am unable to find anything related to IE7.

I've carried out lots of scans: CCleaner, Spybot, A Squared, SuperAntiSpyware. I also use The Shield Antivirus with automatic updates, and Windows is set to automatic updates. After all these scans, no problems have been detected.

Does anybody have any suggestions - in plain English please - I'm not terribly computer literate, although trying. Very trying, some might say!

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have.

(I originally posted this thread under a different heading, until someone kindly suggested I place it here.)

I am fairly certain I had a similar problem with the same version of that dll.

Interestingly, my version of iexplore.exe was the same version.

There had been updates to Windows since they were installed, but those two files were left with the older version.

In addition to version 7.0.6000.16705, I had newer versions up to and including version 7.0.6000.20861 of these files. Using the newer versions seems to have stabilized things greatly.

I cannot give you an easy way to replace these which avoids the technical nitty gritty and for some reason the automatic updates did not automatically replace these files.

I suggest that you have someone technical assist you in searching for the version of mshtml.dll in Windows/System32 and the versin of iexplore.exe in Program Files/Internet Explorer and seeing if you, too have these old versions of the software. If you are like me, you will also have newer versions which are likely more stable which you can use. I suggest that you back up the older versions and see if the newer versions help.

By backing up the older versions, you can return to those if the newer versions make things worse.

    Hi Focuswiz

Thanks for your reply. I did have a technician come out to look at my laptop, thinking there may be a virus in there somewhere, but he could find nothing wrong. I thought the problem was related to the automatic update of Service Pack 3, so I had uninstalled this. His suggestion was to remove IE7, then reinstall Service Pack 3 which would include a download of IE7, which may well eradicate the problems I was having. In the meantime, he suggested I switch to using Firefox as this suffers much less problems than IE7. I did all he suggested, and Windows has, on several occasions, tried to download updates for IE7, which are failing each time. Looks like I have to persevere with Firefox, although I don't like it, and it doesn't work at all with the admin page of my website, so for that I have to use IE7. All in all, I'm still not very happy, but at least I know I don't have any trojans or worms, which was my biggest worry. Hopefully things will sort themselves out over time. Thanks again.

Perhaps there is a simpler way....

With SP3 you really don't need the other files I mentioned, but this might add some stability to your IE7 environment.

Under Tools/Internet Options, go to the "Advanced" tab and scroll down to the HTTP 1.1 Settings on the list that appears (I think it is the third group of items).

Under that heading, if "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" is checked, try unchecking that and see if that improves things.
