Hi all!! Firstly, I read the instructions regarding seeing if my problem has been dealt with before and although there are linked threads, the specifics of my problem seem fairly novel!!

    so... here goes...

I use and enjoy using MSN messenger. I recently update to version 7.0 (as did several of my friends).

Now, in the past whenever I have updated messenger it has been via a notification received in messenger itself advertising a new version. When I clicked on the “OK” button it simply clicked and whirred its way to leaving me with the updated version no problem. It was like this for my friends too.

However, something odd has happened with 7.0……
Since I installed it I am suddenly finding myself logged in under messenger 4.7!!!!
I cannot even find 4.7 on my system but nevertheless I will be working away and will suddenly get a notification that a friend has signed in…. I click on the notification and a window for the old 4.7 version of messenger opens up (no icon in system tray). I went in and made sure that I am not signing in automatically or anything…. And I though I had totally disabled it (it does not appear as a removable programme in add/remove).
With messenger 7.0 I sign in as “appear offline” but the “auto sign in“ that is annoying me with 4.7 means I am appearing as online but under the old version.
Now the spooky bit….. one of my friends has EXACTLY the same issue….. with the same 4.7 version causing the problem!!!!
We both have bought (from official sources) winks and nudges and so would rather not have to uninstall 7.0 but could one of you clever guys (or gals) help us remove messenger 4.7????
If not, could you help explain what is happening, or at least how to prevent 4.7 from auto signing in (preferably disabling it altogether)??? I have not had this problem with previous upgrades.

    Many thanks in anticipation

    Rick

You could always try going into msconfig by going to "RUN" from the startbar and simply typing in "msconfig". Then go to the Startup tab and make sure it's not on that list, and if it is just check the box beside it. That will disable it if it is starting on bootup.

Many thanks for that its a start!!! I am at work at the moment and so will be trying your and any one elses ideas when I get home

I thought it may have something to do with version 7.0 itself since it was never a problem before got 7.0!

    Cheers

Update!!!! Since I seem to have shared this problem with others, I just posed a question on a forum I use to see if anyone else is suffering in a similar fashion..... I have had 3 replies already stating they are having identical problems since they updated (same versions too)!! Could it be that microsoft "broke" messenger when they issued the 7.0 update???

Is it Windows Messenger 4.7? That is installed in Windows XP by default. To remove it, Go into the Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Add/Remove Windows Components. Scroll down and uncheck "Windows Messenger". You can also uncheck "MSN Explorer" (unless that's what you use to connect to the Internet). Then click Next, and the components should be uninstalled.

i was under the impression that removing it that way really didn't kill it. i remember in a thread called Windows Messenger, how do i kill it? where someone posted a run box command that completely killed it

Hi all I was just coming back to say it didnt work and have now seen the tool for killing it (thanks Anhedonic)!!!

It really is a nasty beast isnt it???

It has been "disabled" via add/remove programmes

I checked that it doesnt log in with windows or when I open email....

I removed all privileges for it from my norton Firewall......

20 minutes later Derr derrrrrrrr..... I get a message from a mate saying "hi how are you?".... just pops up in a 4.7 window!! :-(

It has never been a problem until I upgraded to msn messenger 7.0... is it possible that it is that that has done something??

Anyway, I will try the tool tonight!!

    many thanks

    Rick

    Hi FABScott!

I mean Windows messenger (known I believe as version 4.7).
I run MSN messenger 7.0.... I have been updating for ages (ever since about ver 6 I think) when prompted by my system. It is only this last update to msn messenger 7.0 that has caused this re-incarnation of 4.7
Several friends are having the same issue and I have just this minute received an email from a friend who also "removed" it by the method recomended here who has also just had a pop up convo start!!!!

FYI. This is not exactly a problem with MSN, when you upgraded to MSN 7 it didn't affect Windows messenger.
Anyhow removing as above will sort it.

Thanks for all these suggestions!!! :D

The annoying thing is that I am "at work" so cant try em out until this evening..... I have heard "bad things" about removing this programme and so am gonna do a full ghosting tonight (while I go swimming) on my external HDD and will then play around with removing said proggy when I know I have a safe disc image that is not physically attached to my puter!!!

    Thanks again!!
