    Hi
I have a problem with the sound configeration.
My devices are set up with the speakers as default but I cannot hear any conversation on MS Messenger. I get all the system sounds and hear music from the speakers as well as commentary from the internet but I still do not get any sound when on Messenger ....whilst the picture is OK.
What do I need to do on my settings?..or could it be the problem is with the microphone of the other computer?
    Thanks
    Alistair Mackay :(

Have not used Messenger in a while, if your sounds are working, and tested in MEssenger, then you want to:

1: Update your drivers, you didnt mention your sound card or operating system, so I can find that for you if you provide that information..
2: Check your microphone levels in Control panel, sounds, recording tab. Make sure it is green and that the levels pick up your voice. Depending on your sound card and operating system, there are a wealth of options and tests. Often it will alert you if the microphone is muted.
3: Check Messenger for setup and somewhere to configure and test your microphone.
4: Maybe it's not you :) Try to talk to someone else to see if you hear them.

    Hi Major Attitude
Thanks for that. I'm running Windows 7 which was installed 2 weeks ago. My sound at my end is OK with speakers giving me sound and internet dialogue. It is only with Messenger that I don't get anything. My own Microphone works and I get the picture from the other person i am speaking to but no sound. It would appear that it is a problem their end but with updating to W7 it might be just a coincidence that this problem has surfaced. My speakers have the green tick and are selected as default over HDMI devices which are also enabled but not connected to any HDMI device.
    Thanks

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, anmackay...

Try this real quick: open your Registry Editor (click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Run, type 'regedit' (sans quotes), click OK)...click on the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER...in the right pane you should see Name: (Default), Type: REG_SZ, Data: (value not set)...

If the '(value not set)' does not appear, right-click on the (Default) key and delete it - Windows will automatically re-create the key upon reboot with the correct value assigned to it...

This procedure sometimes clears up weird sound problems in Windows programs, most often caused by 3rd-party disk-burning softwares...

    Hi Caliban
thanks for that. When you say tuning wizard , do you mean the one in Messenger..(sorry,I am not at my computer at this time) I SUPPOSE IF THE PROBLEM EXISTS WITH vISTA IT WILL BE AN ISSUE WITH wINDOWS 7 (64BIT) The version of messenger I expect is the latest one so when will you be adding the fix approx?
    Thanks again

I found that info by doing a search for your symptoms - I'm just assuming that the Vista and Win 7 versions are similar, as I'm not a Messenger user...

And, again: that was a quote from Duoc [MSFT] - msgrv2@microsoft.com - looks like he was talking about the Vista version, so the fix may have already been implemented, but it's worth a shot...

Do check your registry when you get a chance: sometimes, complex problems have simple answers...

    ;)

Hi. :wave By 'does not appear', do you mean we should delete the default key if we have no value, (value not set), or if we do see a number in there?
    - sorry if I worded this screwey...:-o

    Greetings, deppy...

Does sound kind of ambiguous, doesn't it? If the actual line "(value not set)" is missing (in other words, a blank right-hand pane), then delete the key...upon reboot, the key should be re-created, and the line "(value not set)" should magically appear...

Hi. :wave I just tried to do that, but when I try to delete the default key, an exclamation mark comes up, warning that 'deleting certain registry values could cause system instability'.
    Should I do it anyways?
