Hello, I am pretty unfamilier with what to do to prevent pop up ads, One such program or pop up ads that are really annoying me is a window that pops up displaying Messenger Service in the upper task bar I guess you could call it, where your close, minimize and maximize tabs are, anyway, is there anything I can do to stop these annoying pop ups that will not cost me any money??? any info would be great, Also I have windows XP and am trying to figure out how I can get programs to not start up automatically, and desplay there icons on the lower startup taskbar beside the clock... thanks for the help

This has been answered repeatedly here, please use the search for Messenger or Messenger Service and the answer will be there.

For startup, Startup CPL is free, small and efficent:

Similar programs, if you dont like that one can be found by searching the front page search box for Startup.

Sounds like you nailed a few things that everyone should be aware of, so ill cover a few, for example:

Killing those messenger popups. They can be disabled in your control panel - Administrative Tools - Services or using by a program as you did.

Killing startup programs you dont need. You usually dont need many, though a firewall and good anti virus are good startup items you should have. Stopping these startup items frees memory from the time you start your PC making for a faster computer from the get go. A popular free Antivirus program would be AVG http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=886 and a popular, easy to use, free firewall would be Zone Alarm
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=388

Killing Spyware, like Gator. Use Ad-Aware http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506 or Spybot
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2471 because you have Gator, that means you have PLENTY more spyware and\or tracking cookies.

Finally, when this is all done, a good drive cleaning followed by a defrag. HDCleaner is a good one and free http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?id=12&sort=25
Most default file types can be safely deleted, like .bak, .tmp, .old and so on. They also clean out the temp directory and temporary internet files, which alone can rob sometimes hundreds of megs. HDCleaner can be a bit confusing as theres a lot of options, so less is better to start, if your not sure, dont delete it, but you can delete to recycle bin for later recovery as an option in that program. Using default options, I have found it to be VERY safe, but there is no guarantee :) Its also handy, if your familiar with a few of your programs because it allows "masks" to be added. For example, I use Paint Shop Pro to view pictures and photos. When I browse, I noticed it leaves a file called pspbrswe.jbf in every directory. So, I delete all jbf on cleanup because they are everywhere. You can get to that stuff later, as an example.

Once your all done there and the PC is clean, smooth and Spyware free, run Windows defrag.

There are many other programs and more things you can do, but this serves as a good basic routine cleaning that should be performed monthly on a PC not used much and more frequently if you use it a lot. Basically, you can spot the spyware and excess files and defragmentation as you go and figure out how often you need to do it.

    Wow what great info

hey that was some great info that you posted, I took all of your advice, and I must say my PC has never ran so good.... it's to bad you cant post that info on your main page so that New guys like myself can see that right off the bat when they visit this site, I do have one question though about the firewall protection though, I keep getting a window popping up saying Zone alarm alert.... the firewall has blocked internet access to your computer (http) from ( IP address listed here) (tcp port 1052) (tcp Flags: s) anyway that is one example of the windows that are popping up, what exactly are they blocking, and why are they blocking it for???? just was curious.... I do have to go back to work tommorow, so dont worry I wont be bothering you as frequently :) thanks again

Yup, Zone Alarm is overly paranoid and most of what it calls threats are normal back and forth traffic. Im not sure about the FREE version, but in the Pro under settings there is a category called Alerts And Logs, in the top check Alert Events Shown to Off. You dont need to constantly be alerted and as I said, its a bit overkill anyhow. Hopefully that fixes it.

I have a small section here for new people linked from main page, but its more for people to understand their computer first. I was thinking about taking this info and doing it under User Guides section, though.

    No bother :)

    Brent;

In addition to what has been said, the dialog which ZA plants on the lower right tells you that something has occurred that you don't really want to allow. You can tell ZA to not bother to notify you and to remember that setting. In my case, I was getting hackers at the rate of too many per hour and finally told ZA to quit bothering me and have never regretted that setting.

battleangel3222, Instead of coming in 3 days late and tossing in a comment, you could have helped much sooner. You could also read a bit more and try to understand hes not an advanced user and setting up a router would be overkill and difficult for him. I dont appreciate useless posts like this that are nothing more then a comment and no help.

You would be best off NOT responding to me because I am not in the mood for this shit today..

    turned off those messages

I turned off those messages like you suggested, everything seems to be running smoothly now and set up to my liking, you are right, I am not advanced at this computer stuff, I know just enough now to get myself into trouble I think :) well at least now if I run into problems I know who to ask, sorry I cant help you with anything, I am a Industrial electrician by day, so if you have problems getting power to your computer, let me know and I can help :D
