I switched from Win98SE to XP a few months back, and just recently got a cable internet connection at home (I'd been offline for about 8 months.) Now I keep getting messages about how my registry is corrupt, etc, and there's always a web address for me to go to to "fix" the problem. The messages pop up in "messenger service" and I'm wondering how to stop them from getting through? I'm running McAfee virus scan, personal firewall, internet security, etc, and they don't seem to be doing any good or else I don't have the correct settings to stop them.

If you're using Internet Explorer, you will have to install a pop-up blocker.

But, before you do that, please let me recommend Mozilla Firefox, which has built-in pop-up blocking, and is overall far more secure than Internet Explorer.

See here for details on the many features of Firefox. You'll never want to use Internet Explorer again!

Also, if you're concerned about the adequacy of your security setup, I would definitely recommend you visit the How To Protect Yourself From Malware thread. It'll show you how to set up an excellent defense for free.

I am using Firefox and they somehow manage to sneak right through. It doesn't only do it when my browser is open, either, anytime my LAN connection is active they show up.

    It's not browser related.

Remove Windows Messenger by clicking start > control panel > add/remove programs > click add/remove windows components on the left > deselect Windows Messenger at the bottom > Click next.

    Shouldn't come back. :)

No Windows Messenger in the list, but isn't Windows Messenger just another name for MSN Messenger anyway? The icons look awful similar.

Windows Messenger is in the 'Windows Components' section of Add/Remove programs (you have to click the button on the left or press alt+w)for any standard version of XP. It is NOT the same as MSN messenger.

No Windows Messenger will be the Instant Message software, but what you are likely seeing is the Messenger Service which is a network tool which sends alerts around networked pcs. This is now being used by some spammers to give you what looks like offical MS alert windows, do not click!

It has nothing to do with the Instant Messenger in Windows or the newer MSN Messeger, which as you know are chat tools.

To disable the Messenger Service you need to either install Service Pack 2 ( have you done this yet? ) as this automatically disables the service or goto

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and stop and set the Startup Type to Disabled for a service called just "Messenger"
